The Fabulist in London
A world premiere is always a thrill! Welcome to The Fabulist, a gorgeous blend of long-lost opera and brand new romance. Make your way to Charing Cross Theatre for a fantastic fast-paced feel-good musical comedy with a difference.
The Fabulist - A vibrant, fast-paced new musical comedy
This vibrant romp through dangers of love, the wonder of magic and the mysteries of the universe is set on a film studio in Tuscany. The year is 1929 and the extremists are making themselves felt, with Mussolini’s forces on the prowl and the Catholic Church busy denouncing heretics.
When the travelling magician and outlawed heretic Julian Agrofontido arrives in the studio, he thinks he’s found a safe place. He falls in love with the eccentric screenwriter Clarice and wants to marry her. She feels the same. But how can she trust a man whose life is based on an illusion? And what’ll happen if the regime catches up with him?
About The Fabulist
Giovanni Paisiello’s original opera The Imaginary Astrologer was written for the ruler of Russia, the notorious Catherine the Great. By all accounts she adored it. The Emperor Napoleon also loved the composer’s music. The Fabulist, with book and lyrics by James Farwell, combines the composer’s beautiful old music with a new plot and lyrics to create sheer musical comedy perfection.
The Fabulist - Cast and Creatives
The fun is directed John Walton, with Musical Director and Orchestrator Bobby Goulder, Set and Costume Designer David Shields, Lighting Designer Fridthjofur Thorsteinsson, Sound Designer Andrew Johnson and Casting Director Debbie O’Brien completing the creative team. The Producer is Steven Levy for Charing Cross Theatre Productions.
Paisiello (1740-1816) composed 94 operas and operettas, all loved for their graceful melodies and bubbly, fun-filled stories. He also wrote 8 church masses, 51 instrumental compositions and countless songs. You might recognise Nel cor più non mi sento from La Molinara, probably his best-known tune.
This is the perfect musical to give you a boost, great for the whole family.

Review: THE FABULIST at Charing Cross Theatre
by Stuart King | Tuesday, August 20 2024, 11:45
These days, Giovanni Paisiello’s name will only be known to the most ardent of Opera buffa/Commedia dell’Arte aficionados. However, during his lifetime he was celebrated as one of the greatest living composers, enjoying considerable royal patronage, fame and renown. Eclipsed by the likes of Rossini and Mozart his work is rarely performed today, but the music for his opera The Imaginary Astrologer has been used by James P Farwell in creating THE FABULIST.
