The Baker's Wife in London
The arrival of a new baker and his younger wife turns a sleepy French village upside down in this beloved musical full of Gallic charm. Based on the 1938 film La Femme du Boulanger by Marcel Pagnol and Jean Giono, The Baker's Wife London revival has a cast packed with West End royalty making it a must-see for lovers of classic musical theatre.
Why you should book The Baker’s Wife tickets
- The music is penned by the legendary Stephen Schwartz (Wicked)and the book is by Joseph Stein (Fiddler on the Roof)
- The Baker's Wife masterfully balances comedy and drama.
- The original cast LP of The Baker's Wife received a Grammy nomination.
A slow-burning cult classic
Crammed with ravishingly lovely tunes, this is the first major UK revival since the West End premiere. In 1990 it was Olivier-nominated as Musical of the Year. The Union Theatre in Southwark produced The Baker's Wife in 2011, staged and directed by Michael Strassen. It attracted rave reviews, including one from respected reviewer Mark Shenton who said, "Michael Strassen reclaims The Baker's Wife forever as the affecting miniature masterpiece that has always been lurking inside it.”
Everywhere it goes, people love this show. While it hasn’t been produced on Broadway yet it has gathered an enormous cult following so you never know – this might be the production that finally transfers this US show over the Atlantic.
A joyous plot stuffed with beautiful songs
The Baker's Wife weaves the story of new arrivals whose break-up shatters the peace of a Provençal village. When the baker's young wife runs off with a handsome shepherd the baker, a broken man, finds he can’t bake any more. The villagers plan to bring the errant wife back to her husband so he can bake again. It’s all very sweet and lovely, and an exciting cast of experienced West End talent brings the magic to life.

Review: THE BAKER'S WIFE at Menier Chocolate Factory
by Miriam Gibson | Friday, July 26 2024, 10:17
With the screen version of Stephen Schwartz's Wicked due out later this year, The Menier Chocolate Factory is staging his earlier, smaller-scale musical, The Baker's Wife. It's an uneven piece, bolstered by a strong cast and lively staging.
