Starlight Express in London
Andrew Lloyd Webber’s legendary musical Starlight Express is back in London! A brand new production of the old favourite on stage in a purpose-built, specially designed Starlight Auditorium at the Troubadour Wembley Park Theatre venue.
A fresh new production of Starlight Express
The original production of Starlight Express wowed audiences at the Apollo Victoria Theatre in 1984, directed by Trevor Nunn and choreographed by Arlene Phillips. It ran for more than seven thousand four hundred performances before closing in early 2002. Billed as a fully immersive audience experience of speed, song and storytelling, it’s wonderful to see it back.
This is the second musical produced by Lloyd Webber Harrison Musicals, a fresh new partnership between Andrew Lloyd Webber and the respected West End producer Michael Harrison.
The Story of Starlight Express
The plot focuses on a child’s train set that comes to magical life, keen to become the world’s fastest train. But until he hears the legend of the Starlight Express, little Rusty has very little hope of winning the prize and winning the heart of the lovely first class carriage called Pearl.
A cast of forty people will zoom above and around the audience on roller skates as they sing their hearts out to classic Lloyd Webber tunes like 'AC/DC', 'Only He', 'Make Up My Heart', 'Light at the End of the Tunnel' and of course the iconic 'Starlight Express' itself.
Starlight Express cast and creative team
The cast for Starlight Express includes Jeevan Braich as Rusty, Kayna Montecillo as Pearl, Jade Marvin as Momma McCoy, Al Knott as Greaseball, Eve Humphrey as Dinah and Tom Pigram as Electra.
They are joined by Jamie Addison, Jessie Angell, Ollie Augustin, Charles Butcher, Renz Cardenas, Catherine Cornwall, Jamie Cruttenden, Kelly Downing, Isaac Edwards, Asher Forth, Sam Gallacher, Lucy Glover, Pablo Gómez Jones, Scott Hayward, Lilianna Hendy, Dante Hutchinson, Lewis Kidd, Hannah Kiss, Oscar Kong, Emily Martinez, Deearna Mclean, Marianthe Panas, David Peter-Brown, Harrison Peterkin, RED, Bethany Rose-Lythgoe, Charlie Russell, Gary Sheridan, Jessica Vaux, Jaydon Vijn, Lara Vina Uzcatia, and Ashlyn Weekes.
The young actors are Shaniyah Abrahams, Cristian Buttaci, Barnaby Halliwell, and Mimi Soetan.
The creative team for this exciting new production will be led by acclaimed director Luke Sheppard (&Juliet, The Little Big Things), set designer Tim Hatley (Back to the Future), costume designer Gabriella Slade (SIX), video designer Andrzej Goulding (Life of Pi), lighting designer Howard Hudson (&Juliet) and sound designer Gareth Owen (MJ The Musical). Arlene Phillips who has been involved with the musical since its initial and first opening in London back in 1984 will be the creative dramaturg. Starlight Express will feature new orchestrations and musical supervision by Matthew Brind.

Even better than you remember it to be!This show was so much fun! I had smiles for the entire show, my face hurt after! Every good thing from previous decades is still here, but it's been lovingly updated and looks stunning. Amazing use of technology and lighting to make it feel fresh and vibrant, there's nothing else like it

DisappointingUnfortunately, this production was nowhere near the quality of Webber's usual musicals. The storyline was terrible and the characters had very little development. Additionally, there were far too many characters to keep track of. The music was good and the special effects were great but that was about it.

Phenomenal Show performed on Wheels!Over the week I was in London, I saw 14 shows and this one was my favourite. Stunning set and the fact that the show was performed on roller blades was amazing. Do yourself a favour and "check it out"!

Confusing characterisation and poor storylineAlthough the lighting and music was very good, the characters were not sufficiently well introduced and this made the storyline confusing. The stars of the show were the marshalls on scooters

Woohoo what a showA really fabulous show. The whole experience was superb. Loved the costumes and songs…… being able to skate and sing wow. Polished and perfect for me. Everyone very welcoming and helpful. It was very busy but toilets worked well plenty of them and really liked the in and out …. that helped relieve the usual traffic that blocks the doorway in the ladies loo Sometimes it was difficult to hear all the words when all singing together but that did not detract from the wonderful experience.

Simply Brilliant! We love this musical and have seen the original version several times in different theatres but this is definitely our favourite so far. The singing and skating are excellent with a particularly memorable performance by "Rusty". The updates work really well and the costumes and lighting are truly spectacular. The Troubadour Theatre is the perfect venue. It is relatively small so everyone is close to the stage. I wouldn't bother with the premium seats which are called "first class carriages" as you'd miss what was going on behind you. We were near the front of the "locomotive" section and had a great view of the whole stage and track. Be aware that the seats near the centre are beside a fence over the entrance aisle. This could partly obscure your view to one side if you are not very tall.

Just as good as the 80'sSlightly apprehensive having been a fan of the production at the Apollo Theatre back in the 80's. However, this was equally brilliant, great fun and with an updated twist that enhanced the experience. Purpose built venue, lighting, music and cast all fabulous. Couldn't fault it!!

A high energy, colourful extravaganza.Where do the actors get the energy to sing and skate? A high energy experience. We felt like we were in the middle of the action and felt a part of the show as the actors gave eye contact and one even fist-bumped my grandson as he waited next to him. My grandson loved the scooter tricks.

Creative interesting but not starlight express consider renaming it!Disappointing good production but lacked the great original story line & music. It’s a great show in its own right but it’s not a patch on the original starlight express. All the right staging acting but lacking in excitement and no starlight train Rustys character does not develop. Scooters ? Not a particularly good addition. Also a haze throughout preventing good visuality.

Review: STARLIGHT EXPRESS at Troubadour Wembley Park
by Stuart King | Monday, July 1 2024, 08:44
This reviewer last had the pleasure of experiencing Starlight Express at the Apollo Victoria in 1988 after key tweaks and revisions were incorporated into the London show from the Broadway production. Having stayed on track for 18 years, wowing millions of fare paying passengers during that time, it finally ran out of steam in 2002. Now, 22 years after reaching the end of the line, an entirely revamped production hopes to electrify a fresh generation of musical trainspotters at the 2000-seater Troubadour venue at Wembley Park.
