Slave Play in London
Starring:
Kit Harington
The most ground-breaking, controversial, and Tony-nominated play of all time is coming to London. A huge hit with Broadway audiences, people were astounded by this stark look at gender, sexuality, and race. Jeremy O. Harris' masterpiece arrives at the Noel Coward Theatre this year for a strictly limited run.
What is Slave Play about?
Set on a plantation in the South, Slave Play centres around three interracial couples who undergo therapy sessions aimed at addressing their sexual dysfunction. As the therapy unfolds, the couples confront their own racial identities, histories, and desires, ultimately delving into the complexities of race relations in contemporary society. Slave Play will challenge audiences to confront uncomfortable truths about systemic racism, while also interrogating the intersections of desire, consent, and power dynamics within intimate relationships.
The play earned 12 Tony Award nominations during its run on Broadway. Premiering at the New York Theatre Workshop in 2018, writer Jeremy O. Harris and director Robert O'Hara will now bring their sell-out play to London and it will be as popular (if not more) when it opens here.
See Fisayo Akinade and Kit Harington in Slave Play
An incredible London cast is planned for Slave Play's West End run, including Fisayo Akinade and Kit Harington. Akinade is best known for his work on Netflix's Heartstopper and his stage credits include the recent production of The Crucible at the National Theatre. Harington was known for his role as Jon Snow in the HBO series Games of Thrones.
Joining them on the West End are Aaron Heffernan and Olivia Washington alongside James Cusati-Moyer, Chalia La Tour, Annie McNamara, and Irene Sofia Lucio who will reprise their roles from the original Broadway production.
The hottest contemporary show to hit London recently, only plays at the Noel Coward Theatre for a limited time this year. With its popularity on Broadway sealed, Slave Play will certainly expose audiences to some great conversations.

IncredibleEvery moment was honed and crafted - every actor firing on all cylinders - so much devastating sorrow and laughter and plenty of uncomfortable conversation to leave you a changed person after, if you’re lucky

I am sorry to say I was very disappointed by this show. The hysterical over-acting and shouting and screaming was far over the top. Despite this loudness it was difficult to hear or understand what the actors were saying, especially in their harsh southern American accents at the beginning. The story was very confusing and weird, especially the first 'historical' part, and the second part in the therapy session was again hysterical and made little sense - when I could hear what they were saying or shouting. The last scene where the black woman looked pleased to be raped by her white partner was rather disturbing both in terms of race and gender. So I wanted to leave very soon into the play, but stayed to give the play a chance and not to disturb the rest of the audience, bit I wouldn't recommend it to anyone. I have never left such a negative review before in my life, but I felt this needed to be said. Sorry!

Extraordinary 21st century playWhile "Slave Play" is undoubtedly challenging and divisive, it cannot be ignored. The play's unflinching honesty forces audiences to confront uncomfortable truths and question their own assumptions about race and relationships.

Power, privilege, and race in romantic relationshipsThe play holds up a mirror to all the ways we define ourselves, and others. especially in romantic relationships. The antebellum south slave therapy angle is outlandish and is a wink to the wokeness of it all. It did have a few moments of self-importance. the acting is good. felt a bit more like a think piece than a play.

OverhypedThis very wordy play was trying to shock but so smug that it lost the audience attention during the overlong therapy session scene. It tried to regain audience interest with nudity and crudity.

Review: SLAVE PLAY at Noel Coward

Another Broadway transfer has just landed in the West End, and given London’s multicultural make-up, together with its largely accepting normalisation of therapy and interracial couples’ counselling, it should prove an interesting, welcome and altogether exciting and challenging addition to the capital’s theatre skyline. On Broadway, SLAVE PLAY secured a record breaking 12 Tony nominations for a play, and if this evening’s opening was anything to go by, it may just achieve an equivalent feat this side of the Atlantic.
