Patriots in London
Patriots – Spookily relevant to the 2020s
Who is a patriot, and who is a traitor? If you’d like to experience a witty, thrilling battle of political wills, Patriots is a play for our times. Created by the man who wrote the Netflix series The Crown, this show has been hotly anticipated. Now it’s here, transferring to the West End, on at the Noel Coward Theatre from Monday 26th May 2023.
What's the plot of Patriots?
“If the politicians cannot save Russia, then we businessmen must. We have not just the responsibility but the duty to become Russian heroes”.
This is 1991. Welcome to the fall of the USSR. With the dawning of a new Russia and the death of the Union, some people win and others lose. You might be a patriot today but by tomorrow you could be a traitor. A new batch of young oligarchs is battling for control of the new Russia. This play follows the billionaire businessman Boris Berezovsky on his extraordinary journey from the president’s inner circle to public enemy number one.
Buy Patriots theatre tickets to experience Peter Morgan’s explosive story, directed by Rupert Goold. The Daily Mail calls it ‘dazzling’. The Evening Standard says it’s ‘thrilling’. The Telegraph calls it ‘lusciously livewire’. This new play delivers a brilliant, often shockingly relevant story of ambition, loyalty and betrayal in a brand new world, and you won’t forget it in a hurry.
Patriots is the international award-winning Peter Morgan’s first new play since The Audience. Sonia Friedman Productions and Almeida lead the way. The BAFTA-winning Tom Hollander, who delighted the nation in The Night Manager and Travesties, reprises his role as Berezovsky, the so-called ‘kingmaker’ behind Vladimir Putin. Will Keen from His Dark Materials also returns, playing Putin himself. Luke Thallon plays Abramovich, and the rest of the cast will be announced in due course.
The Set Designer is Miriam Buether, and the Co-Costume Designers are Deborah Andrews and Miriam Buether. The Lighting Designer is Jack Knowles and the Movement Director is Polly Bennett. The Sound Designer and Composer is Adam Cork. Robert Sterne is the Casting Director.
Who is Patriots for?
Patriots is a serious play designed for people mature enough to understand the ins, outs, and dramatic impacts of international-level political shenanigans.

InformativeI couldn’t hear the two main actors’ voices properly from Row P. They should speak up a bit, especially for foreigners to understand better. But their voices should have been more clear for anybody, with or without hearing or language problems.

EducationalIt was quite informative about Putin and the people surrounding him. How he became President and how he treated the cronies/supporters surrounding him if they did not agree with him.

OutstandingOutstanding show. The story is very powerful and sad, but so true . I lived I Russia in 90s and this show really captured the atmosphere and all realities of that time. Show submerged you into dynamic and fast changing life post perestroika years. Loved how true Russian soul has been shown in Berezovski with amazing music by Vysotski. Loved every moment of it. Brilliant performance by the cast. Can't recommend it enough.
