Evita is heading to London in 2025.
It will be directed by Jamie Lloyd (The Tempest, Sunset Boulevard), with more details to be announced in the future.
Evita tells the story of Eva Perón, the iconic First Lady of Argentina, tracing her rise from poverty to political power. Known for its powerful score, including songs like "Don't Cry for Me Argentina".
Jamie Lloyd has had roaring success with productions like Romeo and Juliet, and Sunset Boulevard which recently transferred from Savoy Theatre to Broadway's St James Theatre.
Andrew Lloyd Webber said in a recent conversation published by Billboard:
“Jamie Lloyd is doing a version of Evita in London this coming summer, and working with a director like Jamie, for me, is a wonderful thing, because he can talk from a different perspective than I do. The consequence of that with SUNSET BLVD., for example, is that we took the score a lot darker, in a lot more dangerous way than the original. But that is the joy. I’m a collaborator. The most important thing to remember about musical theater is it’s all about collaboration.”
It's unconfirmed whether this new production will be the 2019 version from Regent's Park Open Air Theatre, which starred Samantha Pauly as Eva Peron and was set to transfer to the Barbican before being halted by Covid.
London currently hosts two Andrew Lloyd Webber productions: The Phantom of the Opera, which recently marked its 38th anniversary at His Majesty's Theatre, and Starlight Express, making its first return in 40 years at a specially designed auditorium at the Troubadour Wembley Park Theatre.
