Matthew Bourne's Swan Lake in London

When it premiered at Sadler’s Wells in 1995, Matthew Bourne’s triumphant modern re-interpretation of Swan Lake turned tradition upside down, and took the dance world by storm. Now firmly established as a modern day classic, this iconic production is perhaps best-known for replacing the traditional female corps de ballet with a menacing male ensemble. A Sadler’s Wells Associate Artist, Matthew Bourne blends dance, humour and spectacle with extravagant, award-winning designs by Lez Brotherston, to create a provocative and powerful Swan Lake for our times.

Collecting over 30 international theatre awards including three Tonys, Swan Lake has been acclaimed as a landmark achievement on the international stage. It has become the longest running ballet in the West End and on Broadway and enjoyed four hugely successful tours in the UK and thrilled audiences all over the world.

Spectacular with flaws

And those flaws certainly weren’t the swans or “the stranger”. The lead swan dancer was beyond terrific … unbelievable performance throughout, great acting ability and stage presence. Worth the massively expensive ticket on his own. All the dancers were great, though I was most unimpressed by the Prince. If I’d been his mother I’d have thrown him out for being such a whiner!! Grief! Mind you. The Prince had a rubbish part compared with being a swan. He spent half his time running pointlessly back and forth, or off the side of the stage with his arm outstretched like something from Benny Hill. The first 45 minutes of the show were pretty pointless. Loads of walking around and bowing and little else. It was boring. And the “girlfriend” … embarrassingly unfunny. I cringed every time she appeared. Again, a terrible part to have, especially as the lady was a great dancer when given the chance. Plus, two of the most poignant musical themes were wasted on a giant Swan’s matchbox and an old lady wheeling a shopping trolley. Weird. Well, yes, it’s a show I’d like to see again, for the swans and the second act. Are there reduced price tickets for coming in at about 45 minutes in?!?! Hehe

Outstanding

It was groundbreaking for a reason back in 1995. Have seen the ballet danced classically, so it is great to see such a radically different interpretation. Great sets, costumes, and lighting. Funny, yet dramatic. Great blend of dancing styles. So much going on on the stage all the time. Genuine bucket list tick.

Longo Show

the show was too long, lasted 2.5 hours incl the break and there were many repeating moments. The choreographies were repeating and there were not many changes on the set/scenes.

A little too much kitsch

The dancing is average, while the story surrounding it was a bit too much Kitsch for my taste.

Mesmerising

A modern take on the classic tale with Matthew Bourne magic and the sublime music from the ballet maestro Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky. I would watch this again tomorrow and the day after.......
