Groundhog Day in London
You loved the 1993 film, and no wonder – there's something magical about Groundhog Day, and now it's coming back to London to delight audiences with its musical version. The theatre's Artistic Director Matthew Warchus is in charge, and the anticipation is mounting fast. Don't miss it!
Having first premiered in London in 2016, it was nominated for eight Olivier Awards, and won Best New Musical and Best Actor in a Musical for Andy Karl.
Groundhog Day is set to play a strictly limited season, thanks to director Matthew Warchus, composer and lyricist Tim Minchin, choreographer Peter Darling and designer Rob Howell. They were responsible for the international theatre sensation Matilda the Musical, and they've collaborated with writer Danny Rubin to create the stage version of a film that never lost its powerful appeal.
Groundhog Day – The story
Groundhog Day is the hilarious tale of Phil Connors, a seriously cynical TV weatherman from Pittsburg who's sent on a mission to the tiny, remote town Punxsutawney. When he gets there he's mysteriously caught in a weird time loop, which sees him forced to repeat the same day again and again and again... until he finally realises what's going on and realises he needs to break the pattern.
It's a compelling notion, and the movie changed the meaning of the phrase 'groundhog day' forever. Originally a German spring solstice-inspired holiday celebrated in places like French Canada and Pennsylvania, with strange names like Grundsaudaag and Murmeltiertag, now it's inextricably tied up with the film.
Here's how it goes. On the second of February, a day also called Candlemas day, the Groundhog peeps out of his winter quarters. If it's sunny and he sees his own shadow, he darts back indoors for another six weeks and spring doesn't arrive 'til late. If it's cloudy the animal stays outdoors, and an early spring is thought to be on the way. It's a charmingly eccentric tradition. And this musical is a whole lot more fun!

I cried multiple timesA fantastic production; Tim Minchin's lyrics got me through a lot of hard times, and the morals of struggling against depression really helped me improve my own mental health and see the world through a better lens. Genuinely, thank you. I'd heard the soundtrack before, but seeing it live was life affirming and wonderful. It would be extreme to say the story saved my life, but it certainly made me reconsider my suicidal outlook and find more beauty in the world.

Fantastic and surprisingThis show is a bit unsettling at first, then transforms into an amazing escalating story. They manage to cover a few sensitive themes with humour and the set design is extremely clever. Of course, very funny as well. I warmly recommend it. The Old Vic is always a great place to visit!

Review: GROUNDHOG DAY at Old Vic
by Stuart King | Friday, June 9 2023, 09:39
This theatregoer waxed lyrically about the London production of GROUNDHOG DAY back in September 2016. Subsequently, its Broadway transfer added a clutch of Tony nominations to the Olivier award it won for Best New Musical. Now back in London with Andy Karl once again leading the cast as cynical womanising weatherman Phil Connors, the run at the Old Vic is sure to dazzle audiences once more.
