All's Well That Ends Well | Globe in London

A woman cures the king, then takes her obsession with the man she loves man to new extremes. Welcome to Shakespeare's All's Well That Ends Well, a rarely-staged thriller of a treat produced with wit and humour at the capital's only candlelit theatre, Shakespeare's Globe.

Written by William Shakespeare some time between 1598 and 1608, the play is based on Giletta di Narbona from Giovanni Boccaccio's The Decameron. This fresh new production brings the Bard's compelling story bang up to date.

All's Well That Ends Well the story

A comedy-thriller with a difference, this is the story of Helen. She's an ordinary woman but she manages to cure the king of his illness. As a reward she's allowed to marry anybody she wants – and for some reason she wants the horrible Bertram, the nobleman she's been in love with for ages. He isn't happy, fleeing abroad to escape her, but the manipulative Helen doesn't give up that easily and follows him. Will she ever be accepted as Bertram's wife?

About All's Well That Ends Well

All's Well That Ends Well is one of Shakespeare's 'problem' plays, originally listed as one of his comedies. A lesser-known play than many, it is rarely performed – giving you the chance to see something extra-special. Far from a typical Shakespearean comedy, it is spiced up with death, betrayal, hate, and lost love.

This new production is lively and succinct, slimmed down and speeded up to create a brisk, brutal plot exploring toxic masculinity, set in 1950s France and Italy, brilliantly produced by Chelsea Walker and starring a top class cast.

Often described as Shakespeare’s uneven comedy ALL’S WELL THAT ENDS WELL presents integral problems for both directors and their actors. So, has Chelsea Walker managed to unearth the magical formula which delivers the comedic elements whilst avoiding the jarring incongruities?
