A Midsummer Night's Dream in London
Don't miss this cracker of a version of the classic A Midsummer Night's Dream, whisking the West End back into the magic forest for summer to delight us with its flying fairies, wicked fogs and curious revels by moonlight. Expect a treat for anyone who loves a good blast of 400 year old humour from The Bard.
A Midsummer Night's Dream the story
This hugely popular comedy by William Shakespeare, written some time around 1595 – 1596, is set in Athens, Greece, where various sub-plots gather around the marriage of Theseus and Hippolyta. One involves a confusing conflict between four Athenian lovers, another concerns the battles between a fairy king and his queen, and a third reveals what happens when six amateur actors rehearse the play they'll be performing before the wedding.
Demetrius and Lysander both adore Hermia. Hermia loves Lysander, but her dad forces her to either marry Demetrius, die or become a nun. Hermia and Lysander get married in secret. Helena is in love with Demetrius, but he wants to marry Hermia. Helena tells Demetrius Hermia has run away with Lysander. Demetrius follows them. Helena follows Demetrius. It is as hilarious as it is complicated! A joyous happy ending awaits you, perfect for summer.
About A Midsummer Night's Dream
Following its critically acclaimed run in 2019, the Bridge Theatre’s fantastic production returns for a limited run. Back in 2019 The Telegraph newspaper critic called the show 'the most accomplished Shakespeare production of [Nicholas Hytner's] I’ve ever encountered'. Other critics agreed, giving it a five-star appeal. Because the seats are wrapped around the stage you get an immersive experience where you follow the action on foot, adding extra excitement.
A Midsummer Night's Dream cast and creatives
JJ Feild plays Oberon and Theseus, Susannah Fielding is Titania and Hippolyta, Emmanuel Akwafo plays Bottom and David Moorst plays Puck and Philostrate. JJ Feild has delighted us in Little Disasters, Austenland, and Captain America. Susannah Fielding made waves in The Merchant of Venice, and This Time with Alan Partridge. Emmanuel Akwafo made short work of the wonderful For the Black Boys…, and Sex Education, and David Moorst appeared in both Killing Eve and Blitz.
Direction is by the highly respected Nicholas Hytner, with brilliant Evening Standard Theatre Award-winning design from Bunny Christie, costumes from Christina Cunningham, lighting by Bruno Poet and sound by Paul Arditti. Returning to the team is also the composer Grant Olding, the movement director Arlene Phillips, and the associate director and associate movement director James Cousins.
Opening at the Bridge Theatre this Spring, experience this breathtaking reimagining of Shakespeare’s classic, where immersive staging, bold twists, and a festival-like atmosphere bring the magic to life like never before.

DifferentFun evening. Although very difficult with some scenes understanding dialogue due to screeching, shouting and masks. Staging was good, theatre fantastic. Good atmosphere overall.
