Yank! A World War II Love Story in London

“Some stories didn’t make it into the history books”

In 1943, young Mid-Westerner Stu serves in the army as a photographer for Yank Magazine, the journal ‘for and by servicemen’. Following the men in Charlie Company, YANK! the musical explores what it means to be a man and fall in love… and struggle to survive in a time and place where the odds are stacked against you.

Based on the Off-Broadway hit production, YANK! transfers to London following a hugely successful run at the Hope Mill in Manchester earlier this year. Directed by James Baker, with a story and music by American brothers David and Joseph Zellnik, the musical pays homage to the timeless music of the 1940s.

Deeper than you think!!

Loved it because it was a deeper story than expected, though set in the 1940's it really resonated with today's problems and realities, choreography was very good...

Review: YANK! at the Charing Cross Theatre

by Phil Willmott | Thursday, July 13 2017, 08:07

Yank! It's great that London audiences, including me, are finally getting a chance to see Yank! the American musical by composer Joseph Zellnik with book and lyrics by his brother David. New Yorkers have been raving about it to me for years.

The revival currently playing at the Charring Cross Theatre, fast becoming the venue for quality and innovative musical theatre under the Artistic Direction of Thom Southerland, started life at the Hope Mill Theatre in Manchester. The critics loved it and enterprising producer Katie Lipson has lead efforts to bring it to London.

Why are the London Producers of YANK! so coy about its Gay Storyline?

by Phil Willmott | Monday, June 26 2017, 13:46

Yank! The modest Charing Cross Theatre, situated underneath the arches of the railway station which gives the venue it’s name, is fast establishing itself as a home for innovative and quality musical theatre.

I'm glad to hear that the next production will be YANK! Yank was the nick name given to American soldiers in the Second World War and there’s long been a buzz about the piece amongst show aficionados in New York following a try out production Up State and Off Broadway in 2010.
