Walking With Ghosts in London
Starring:
Gabriel Byrne
Gabriel Byrne’s book, a memoir, caused a stir, a beautiful true story loved by many. Now it’s on stage, presented by the award-winning actor himself. Byrne has played parts in more than 80 movies. His ‘exquisite portrait’ of an Irish childhood is beautifully written and thoughtful. Book now to discover the actor’s ‘dreamy, lyrical, unvarnished’ tale of life in a working class family and the impact of fame. No wonder Walking With Ghosts theatre tickets are such hot property.
What's the plot of Walking With Ghosts?
This is Gabriel Byrne, on stage, live. One man, telling a remarkable story in his own words. This awesome piece of theatre is adapted from Byrne’s best-selling memoir of the same name. It’s directed by the brilliant Emmy award-winning director Lonny Price. And it’s one of the most unusual shows of the year so far.
What’s the story? Roll back time to the actor’s childhood. Byrne grew up on the outskirts of Dublin, where he found peace and entertainment in the fields and hills. The performance is both a sensual recollection of childhood in an Ireland that no longer exists, and an exploration of stardom in Hollywood and on Broadway. The end result is a beautiful reflection of one man’s life journey... so far.
The oldest of six children, Byrne grew up in a working class family. When young he had notions of entering the priesthood and, at eleven years old, crossed the Irish Sea to England to join a seminary. Expelled four years later, he returned home to Dublin. Working at odd jobs, spending time as a messenger boy and factory labourer, he adored the cinema. And it was the movies that helped him imagine a very different life for himself, way beyond 1960s Ireland.
Discovering the theatre, he found the poetry of Dublin’s streets and the city’s eccentric characters increasingly fascinating. When a friend suggested Byrne join an amateur drama group, his life changed forever. A dazzling forty year career in film and theatre followed, complete with addiction issues and problems handling fame. If you’d love to experience an unusually sensual recollection of childhood along with insights into one man’s experiences with Hollywood and Broadway stardom, this one’s for you.
The Sound Designer and Composer is Sinead Diskin, the Set and Lighting Designer is Sinead McKenna, the Costume Designer is Joan O’Clery, and the Associate Director is Matt Cowart.
Who is Walking With Ghosts for?
Walking with Ghosts is very funny, but it’s also heartbreaking. A beautiful homage to the people and places that shape human destinies, it isn’t suitable for children.

Review: WALKING WITH GHOSTS at the Apollo Theatre
by Miriam Gibson | Tuesday, September 13 2022, 08:54
In Gabriel Byrne’s one-man show, Walking With Ghosts, he heads back to his boyhood in Dublin- the characters, the noises, the boyhood scrapes. And we’re lucky enough to be coming along for the ride.
