The Time Traveller's Wife in London
Now and again a story grabs everyone’s imagination, flies off with it, and scores a massive cultural hit. This is one of those stories. After a world premiere success at Chester Storyhouse, this beautiful musical will take to the stage at the Apollo Theatre, at the venue from 7th October 2023 until 30th March 2024. As you can imagine lovers of musical theatre are excited at the prospect of seeing such an unusual plot brought to life so cleverly on stage. It’s no wonder Time Traveller’s Wife theatre tickets are set to sell fast.
The cast? David Hunter will play the time traveller Henry, known and loved in the West End for his work in Waitress, Kinky Boots and Once. Joanna Woodward plays his wife Clare, an understudy for the role of Vivian Ward in Pretty Woman: The Musical. The rest of the cast will be confirmed nearer the time.
Lauren Gunderson has adapted this complicated story for the stage, with original music and lyrics by Joss Stone and Dave Stewart. There’s additional music by Nick Finlow, plus additional lyrics by Kait Kerrigan. Bill Buckhurst is the Director. The designs are by Anna Fleischle, the choreography comes from Shelley Maxwell, and the lighting design is from Lucy Carter. The sound designer is Richard Brooker and the show is produced by Colin Ingram.
The result is a clever and charming musical that represents this cherished story beautifully. If you’ve ever wondered what it’d be like if the love of your life could travel in time, the plot imagines everything in an extraordinary way – no wonder the book was an international best-seller, winning the Exclusive Books Booker Prize and a British Book Award. And it’s no surprise Warner Bros. and New Line Cinema bought the TV and movie rights. Whether you’ve seen the 2009 film, the TV series or not it’s a delightful on-stage experience and makes a magical musical theatre treat.
What's the plot of The Time Traveller’s Wife?
The Time Traveller’s Wife: The Musical is based on the 2003 book by Audrey Niffenegger, a gorgeous and complex novel that whisks readers backwards and forwards in time, following a time traveller’s husband and his wife’s whirlwind relationship. The 2009 movie starring Eric Bana and Rachel McAdams brought the story to millions more people. You’ll meet Henry and Clare, kept apart by time but united by a bond so powerful it never breaks. Will they manage to hold onto one another as time pulls them apart?
Who is The Time Traveller’s Wife for?
While the age limit of the stage musical is to be confirmed, the movie was recommended for people aged 14 or more.

Back to the FutureThe effects were excellent and the show mostly followed the film storyline with a couple of tweaks to bring it to the stage. Not sure it lends itself to a musical though.

A good addition to the book/TV series/film to enjoy this captivating story. We had seen the TV series, so the plot was probably easier to follow although I imagine not too difficult for a first timer. There were some particularly good vocals particularly from the leading lady. A nice thought-provoking story which some clever use of the stage area which constantly revolved and changed for each scene. Ideal for couples or those with a fascination for the challenges of time-travel.

SpectacularFor a new show, you would think it had been around as long as some of the greats. Was a bit worried it wouldn't transcend from book/ film / TV and then stage, was I wrong!! The show was mesmerizing and acted beautifully, it was the act the played Gomez that actually stood out for me a very physical actor that just took the stage by storm. Well done all!!! 5******** of you've not seen it just get it booked

Lovely playThe play was lovely - great story and good acting. Nice night out. The theatre could be better - very narrow seats and extremely limited legroom. There was no advance warning that the play was about to start, nor about how long the break was.

Loved this show! The cast of the musical is led by David Hunter (Henry), Joanna Woodward (Clare), Tim Mahendran (Gomez), Hiba Elchikhe (Charisse) and Ross Dawes (Henry's Dad) and they were a strong team. The chemistry between the two principals was obvious moving the audience through many emotions and Tom and Hiba provided delightful comedy at just the right times. I can thoroughly recommend this treatment of the book.

A musical treatLoved this show - superb leading characters, good music, wonderful singing, great acting, clever scenery arrangements and terrific special effects. My only criticism is it was a bit loud and I had to remove my hearing aids! However, I appreciated the diction being very clear so I didn’t miss anything.

DisappointingI enjoyed the first half, the singing was very good and stage lighting effects were impressive however during the second half i got very bored and felt everything was so repetitive. Sadly couldn’t wait for it to end! The songs weren’t memorable and I didn’t get any goosebumps that I normally get watching musicals. I feel the story just doesn’t lend itself to a musical genre sadly.

Review: THE TIME TRAVELLER’S WIFE at Apollo Theatre Shaftesbury Avenue
by Stuart King | Thursday, November 16 2023, 14:13
The 2003 surprise bestseller by unlucky-in-love novelist Audrey Niffenegger provides the basis for Dave Stewart and Joss Stone’s musical treatment. By necessity the plot-line is erratic and segmented, but whilst the production is far from mind-blowing, it has a great deal to commend it, helped by some studious tweaking and truncating of the source material by playwright Lauren Gunderson.
