The Three Sisters the story

The scene is a small Russian town in the middle of nowhere. You'll meet three sisters, their brother and his fiancé, a teacher, a doctor, an old woman and a band of soldiers stationed nearby. The world is going up in flames and they're desperate to create a better life. Will they make it happen despite the love, loss and dramatic social change they face?

About The Three Sisters

The play, written in 1900, was first performed in 1901 at the Moscow Art Theatre. This world premiere features a new translation by the respected playwright Rory Mullarkey.

The play has a long history, with various landmark productions standing out over the past 120 years. John Gielgud's 1936–37 season at the Queen's Theatre has never been forgotten, also starring Dame Peggy Ashcroft and Michael Redgrave. 2017 saw the play staged by Sydney Theatre Company at the Drama Theatre, Sydney Opera House. In 2019 it took to the stage at the Almeida Theatre in London, one of a string of productions to grace the capital. It has been transformed into a full-length opera by a Hungarian composer and other productions have re-set the action in Nigeria, Liverpool, Scotland and Havana, proving that the plot is relevant to every culture, situation and country. It has even been adapted to reflect the lives of the Bronte sisters.

The cast features Michael Abubakar as Tuzenbach, Kelvin Ade as Fedotik and Cover, Rachel Barnwell as Ensemble and Cover, Ishia Bennison as Anfisa, Natalie Klamar as Natalya Ivanovna, Richard Pyros as Vassily Solyony, Paul Ready as Aleksandr Vershinin, Shannon Tarbet as Masha, Michelle Terry as Olga, Ruby Thompson as Irina, and Stuart Thompson as Andrei.

Directed by Caroline Steinbeis (The Contingency Plan, Rutherford and Son), we have Shiv Ravheru as the assistant director. Oli Townsend is the designer and Anna Watson is the candlelight designer. Oliver Vibrans is the composer, Haruka Kuroda is the fight and intimacy director, and Aline David the movement director and choreographer. The casting comes from Becky Paris.
