The Winter's Tale in London
Starring:
Judi Dench, Kenneth Branagh
The Winter's Tale – Shakespeare with that magical Branagh touch
We're proud to introduce the Kenneth Branagh Theatre Company, brand new creators of fine theatre responsible for a total of five remarkable plays on stage at the Garrick theatre between autumn 2015 and late 2016.
The play was first published in 1623. Some experts think it's a comedy. Some believe it's a romance. Others feel it's a 'problem play', which first reveals a host of issues then, in later acts, presents solutions and delivers a happy ending. Either way it's a brilliant piece and Branagh and company are bound to make a splendid job of it. With him at the helm, quality comes guaranteed.
If you love William Shakespeare's The Winter's Tale, adore great acting and appreciate the talents of two of Britain's best-loved stage stars, Dame Judi Dench and Kenneth Branagh, you'll never forget this very special production of a timeless classic.
This new production is co-directed by Rob Ashford and Kenneth Branagh. The talented pair's collaboration on Macbeth bodes well for this latest adventure into the wonders of Shakespeare, generating excellent reviews in Manchester, UK and New York, USA.
This epic play has been covered countless times over the centuries. And as soon as movies were invented it took to the silver screen, with 1910 seeing a silent film released. A TV version was screened by the BBC in 1981 and in 2014 choreographer Christopher Wheeldon created a full-length ballet version of the play for the Royal Ballet. Its appeal never dulls.
The Winter's Tale – the story
You'll follow the action and intrigue at King Leontes' court in Sicilia, and his interactions with the King of Bohemia. All is well until complications arise when the Bohemian King and Leontes' wife, the queen, get a bit too friendly on a royal visit.
Eventually there's a trial, at which the magical Oracle of Delphi declares the queen innocent. But King Leonte doesn't want to hear the truth and, in a fit of rage, he banishes her from his kingdom. Their little son Mamillius soon dies of grief.
The queen's newborn baby daughter, Perdita, is rescued from death by a Bohemian shepherd. He raises her a his own daughter... and sixteen years later the story's delayed ending brings happy surprises.

Shame about the second half.Very well done. Everything is top drawer, its just not a great play. Very strong first half, superb. Second half gets a bit silly.

Amazing story & Amazing castUtterly mesmerising performances from the whole cast. In particular, as expected, Brannagh and Dench prove why they are legends of the stage but not to be out done was the wonderful performance of Miranda Raison. Totally compelling and heartfelt. A fantastic production. A must see!

How it's supposed to be done!Flawless acting by the entire cast, not just the leads who were unsurprisingly magnificent. Beautifully staged in a magnificent theatre. You watch the play knowing that it really doesn't get better than this.

Brilliant performance, a real tour-de-force!The show was fantastic - the whole cast is phenomenal. The first half is quite dark, but the second half is much more upbeat and fun! The play is definitely worth seeing (if you can get tickets!!)

BrilliantBranagh knows how to do Shakespeare! I love the Winters Tale but most productions drag a bit in the second half. Not Branagh's! I came out uplifted and entranced. Simply wonderful.

A Play of 2 halvesShakespeare must have fallen asleep half way through writing this tragic tale of woe and sadness and then woken up looking on the bright side!! And wrote in a completely different style. Such a delight.

Beautifully staged and actedWe are not Shakespeare aficionados however loved the whole experience. The quality of the staging and acting allowed the marvelous use of language and storytelling to shine. The sets and lighting design created a strong sense of atmosphere and drama and the beautiful costumes a real taste of period detail. The Garrick itself is a beautifully restored opulent theatre which adds to the magic.

MagicWe was in London for few days visiting our grand son. We book in advance this show as we are fan's of Dame Judi Dench and Sir Kenneth Brannagh- whom's we have seen on stage in "Ivanov" few years ago. We did read the script in French and in English to get the language music and keep the story fresh in our ears and brain. Thanks to all of you on stage for the great moment of theater. The performance of each individual is remarquable. Of course Dame J. Dench and Mrs Brannagh are at the top of their arts. What's is extremly remarquable is the each word and situation are as we say in french " habités", actors gave sens to what they told to the public, that's acting and not playing, thanks we have had the chance to be part of this magic moment. Merry X-Mas to all performers of "Winter's tale" Annie & Philippe Blanchard Paris

Wonderful atmosphere, Christmassy show, brilliant actors. The only small issue is that I was surprised there was no form of microphone for the actors as it was a strain sometimes to hear them speak, their voices sounded quiet.

Should actors be micked? We sat towards t he back of the stalls, and it was just as well we knew the story as we w ere unable to hear at least a third of it. Younger actors particularly appear to be unaware of how to project their voices. The production was beautiful, but the evening was disappointing. ( we are very regular theatre goers!)

'The Winter's Tale' is Much More Than a 'Show'!This is much more than simply a 'show'. It is a theatrical masterpiece. Shakespeare's play is hard to pigeonhole, as it has aspects of all of his genres - tragedy, comedy, kingship, play-within-a-play, lyricality. And to have Branagh & Dench at the heart of it with a wonderful supporting cast entering fully into all the styles and portrayals demanded - wow! I just hope that the year of the Branagh Theatre Company grows into something sustainable longer term - perhaps a permanent theatre company producing the best plays of all eras with the best talented actors & actresses, experienced or full of potential.

Difficult to choose one of your options for "who should see this play". I don't think Shakespeare really fits into those brackets.

amazing show! What an awesome shakespearian treat this is. Stellar acting and truly reminded me of Kenneth Branagh's Renaissance Theatre productions in the 90's. This is theatre at its very best. Believe the hype, this is the hottest ticket in town right now and rightfully so. Dame Judi Dench is an absolute joy to watch on the stage and a welcome return to the stage by Kenneth Branagh. The supporting cast is absolutely wonderful and the staging subtle and choreographed beautifully. Simply brilliant so glad we went!

Jealousy overcome - wonderfulIn spite of the poor seats it did not stop our enjoyment of the show which offered a great story, great acting and an interesting interpretation of Shakespeare but that is why he is a great playwright. I have seen several productions of "A Winter's Tale" and no two productions are the same. I loved the staging of this and how it brought out the comic aspects of the play. Congratulations to all concerned. We are returning to the Garrick next March looking forward to another enjoyable theatrical experience.

DO I REALLY ENJOY SHAKESPEARE ???!!I think our problem was that we were in the grand circle with restricted view. Heat rises and we were very hot. Acting was good and it was magnificent to see Kenneth Branagh and Judi Dench on stage. However basically I struggle a little with Shakespeare ( although we have been several times to RSC in Stratford and enjoyed the performances - but could be enhanced because we get very good seats. ) And I think that The Winters Tale is not a favoured play of mine. Therefore if you are thinking of going get better seats ( expensive ) and know that you like the play !
