The Marriage Of Figaro in London

The first revival of Joe Hill-Gibbins’ production of Mozart’s comic opera, The Marriage of Figaro, is back at the ENO after an acclaimed 2020 premiere, beautifully conducted by Ainārs Rubiķ. Expect a bold, memorable and highly entertaining production, the perfect foil for Mozart's gorgeous overtures and arias.

The Marriage of Figaro- a gifted, respected director weaves a classic love story

The story? Count Almaviva is a cheat. He makes advances on Susanna, his servant’s fiancée, almost bringing Figaro’s marriage to an end before it begins. When the householders take sides, deception, disguise and double crossing create a comic battleground of a background for poor Figaro’s sufferings.

Widely adored as one of the greatest operas ever, the music delivers a lovely playful tone. The arias and ensemble pieces perfectly complement the plot as Figaro and Susannah are split apart, and then get back together. You’ll recognise ‘Voi che sapete’ and you’ll already know ‘Non piú andrai’, which always accompanies the annual Trooping the Colour ceremony.

Glittering operatic stars sing the main roles

The former ENO Harewood Artist David Ireland sings the title role. He’s recently thrilled audiences with debuts at the Opéra de Lille as Quince in Laurent Pelly's acclaimed production of A Midsummer Night’s Dream, and again as Quince in Laurence Dale’s new production at the Opera Carlo Felice Genoa and at the Royal Opera House in Oman. He delighted us with his work with the Irish National Opera as Gessler in Guillaume Tell, the Opéra National de Lorraine as Kuligin Katja Kabanova, and the Opéra de Montpellier as Gran Sacerdote Nabucco.

He’s joined by the internationally renowned British soprano and former ENO Harewood Artist, Mary Bevan as Susannah. Her recent operatic hits include the role of Elvira in Rossini's L’italiana in Algeri at Garsington Opera, the title role in Rossi's Orpheus for the Royal Opera House at the Sam Wanamaker Theatre, as Despina in Mozart’s Così fan tutte, and as Yum-Yum in The Mikado at English National Opera.

The production is conducted by Ainārs Rubiķis, tipped as another major success in his role as Music Director with the Komische Oper, Berlin. A symphony orchestra and opera conductor with some smash hits under his belt, he has worked in Europe, the USA, Russia, and Australia and has been music director of the Komische since 2018.

With a captivating blend of comedy and social commentary, The Marriage of Figaro uses Mozart's timeless music and witty libretto to convey the story perfectly.
