The Libertine in London
Starring:
Dominic Cooper
Stephen Jeffreys’ The Libertine, a true story, was later made into a 2004 film starring Johnny Depp, a smash hit and another feather in the actor's ridiculously talented cap. It's the curious tale of John Wilmot, the second Earl of Rochester, a hugely charismatic poet, playwright and rake whose legendary appetite for drink and women made him both famous and infamous during the 1670s.
In a time and culture famous for its hedonism, the Earl was the most hedonistic of all. But a chance encounter with a Playhouse actress stops him in his tracks and forces him to consider everything he thinks and feels about love, life, and the the world.
This play is packed to the rafters with wonderful wit, written with considerable flair, a peep into a wild and flagrant period. Life back then was colourful and fascinating, and you'll find it thrilling exciting to see history reproduced on stage. The language is amazing, the costumes stunning, the stage sets richly convincing. But running through the play there's an incisive and cold critique of life in the most notorious age of excess.
The opening line says it all. "You will not like me. No, I say you will not," claims the Earl of Rochester gleefully, right at the start of the play. It's riotously funny and intriguing from the offset and one of the finest comedies of sexual manners ever written.
The second Earl of Rochester was born in 1647 and died in 1680, poet, satirist, playwright and a man who pulled out all the stops out in the merciless pursuit of pleasure. He might be the ultimate, sensation-seeking product of a decadent era... but are things really that different today?
Bear in mind the play is only suitable for people aged over fifteen, full of sexual references and very strong language. What would the Earl himself say about it, if he were still here? No doubt he'd be delighted to see his life story unfold on stage four hundred years later.
The Libertine – The story
John Wilmot, the staggeringly egotistical second Earl of Rochester, led a completely debauched life. His alcohol consumption was staggering, of legendary proportions, and his taste for bedding women of every age and type was a scandal. When the king, Charles the Second, requests a play from the saucy pen of the Earl, Rochester gladly agrees to write one. But his antics infuriate the king to such an extent that there's a real possibility he'll be exiled, thrown out of England and banished abroad.

DisappointingBilled as a bawdy Restoration drama, it was certainly bawdy; the acting was proficient; stage direction and lighting good - but the script and the "story line"failed - it was an attempt to recreate the language of the Restoration period - but the story line was lacklustre and seemed to follow the line so often adopted by modern film and TV period dramas, where is thought sufficient to recreate the "atmosphere" of the period in costume; effect and language with less regard for an effective script and story line.

The Libertine - thought provokingWasn't sure what to expect when we went to see The Libertine. It turned out to be funny, easy to watch and the same time slightly thought provoking. Glad I went to see it but it won't be for everyone, if you don't like slightly rude things this isn't for you. Otherwise go and see it, especially whilst it is in the beautiful Haymarket Theatre.

good performancesIt was an interesting interpretation of the history into today. It was funny at places, especially when they had the issue with Dominic - Ophelia hair tangle which wasn't the part of the play of course but they have dealt with it very nicely. Ophelia was very good. Some parts had very fast talking which was difficult to understand. Glad I have seen it but wasn't the best production I saw this year.

A saucy storyThis is a great restoration romp, and as long as you don't mind the language (rude) you will enjoy it for its vigour and humour.

Girls night outBawdy and fun. Not for the faint hearted or easily shocked. Dominic Cooper really enjoying himself. Supporting cast good apart from v. irritating, OTT and hammed up role of a prostitute.

This is an adult play witty and entertaining with great lighting and costumes. Even though Dominic Cooper is the lead there are some really good performances from the rest of the cast . Nell was particularly engaging before the play began !

Eye OpenerThe reason for my review title is just plain and simple, the show was an eye opener! By this I mean interesting and very different. When purchasing your ticket and venturing into the theatre just have an open mind and be aware the dislog is very blue in places. I've come away in two minds about the show: One being I'm not sure why I sat through 2 hours of nothing! Two it's made me think about life in a different way. So I would say go and see this play it's an Eye Opener!

Review: THE LIBERTINE at the Haymarket Theatre
by Andrew Bewley | Tuesday, October 4 2016, 09:23
Stephen Jeffrey’s play about famed hell-raiser, conversationalist and filthy poet John Wilmot (Dominic Cooper) is set during the reign of King Charles II and investigates Wilmot’s short-lived, adult life. It marks the long-awaited return of Dominic Cooper to the West End Stage after he shot to theatrical stardom as Dakin in Alan Bennett’s 2004 award-winning National Theatre production, The History Boys.
