The Last Laugh in London

As they chat backstage in a dressing room, three comedy legends explore the mysteries of life, death, comedy, and the meaning of being funny. Welcome to The Last Laugh, a fresh new play about Tommy Cooper, Eric Morecambe and Bob Monkhouse. It heads to the West End for a limited season before a UK tour.

The Last Laugh - The Story

British comedians Tommy Cooper, Eric Morecambe and Bob Monkhouse kept the nation laughing from the 1950s through to their deaths, each a national treasure in their own right. Morecambe scored a huge hit with TV comedy partner Ernie Wise, Cooper's off-the-wall humour had people in tears of laughter on TV and screen, and multi-talented Monkhouse's acting, writing and presenting skills were always spiced with a wicked sense of fun. Add them together and you get sheer stage magic.

About The Last Laugh

This laugh-out-loud, laugh a minute show comes from the award-winning writer and presenter Paul Hendy, who also directs. He's no stranger to Cooper, Monkhouse and Morecambe, having written, produced and directed the short film The Last Laugh in which the same three comedians discuss the secrets of life and comedy. In 2018 Hendy produced and directed Mr Sunshine, a short film exploring the life of Eric Morecambe.

Having wowed audiences at the Edinburgh Fringe before taking off on a UK tour, the show is heading for London in 2025 to bring joy to audiences of every age, whether or not they remember the trio. This is a warm-hearted, funny, nostalgic and poignant play packed with gags and stories to deliver the ultimate feel-good West End experience.

The Last Laugh Cast

Reprising their acclaimed tour performances, Bob Golding (Tweenies) plays Eric Morecambe, Damian Williams (Andy & The Band) is Tommy Cooper and Simon Cartwright (Howerd’s End) takes the role of Bob Monkhouse. The play is produced by Evolution Productions.

Didn’t stop laughing!

Such a joyous and poignant show. Nostalgic but hilariously funny. Amazing acting and the length was perfect - nothing strained and no lecturing - just the gags

Funny and Nostalgic

A funny and nostalgic play about three comedy heroes from the late 20th century. The actors who played parts were excellent and had them off to a tee. The show is most suitable for the older generation who can remember the original characters.

Sad

Show started late If you enjoy the old jokes fine. The actors worked hard and did a good job.

Best for baby boomers?

Good characterisations / impressions. Enjoyable but material didn't always hit home. About 90mins no intermission. I think other venues have 2nd half Q&A but probably wouldn't work in this larger theatre.

Nostalgic and fun

If you're of a certain age and remember these 3 titans of comedy then this is very nostalgic and made wonderful by their perfect portrayal by the actors. 80 mins with no interval flies by with much laughter throughout.

Review: THE LAST LAUGH at Noel Coward Theatre

by Stuart King | Thursday, February 27 2025, 16:43

What happens when you put three of yesteryear’s British comedy giants in the same room? Well obviously they tell jokes, rib each other, engage in banter and reminisce. Such is the premise of THE LAST LAUGH in which Tommy Cooper, Eric Morecambe and Bob Monkhouse find themselves backstage sharing a dressing room.
