The Ladykillers in London
The Ladykillers – A welcome return of a firm British favourite
Ealing comedy films are so well-loved they’ve become legendary. So it’s no surprise that this masterful stage adaptation of the original 1955 movie has been resurrected for another run in London’s West End. Welcome back!
Award winning stuff
The show won a coveted WhatsOnStage.com Best New Comedy award, written by ‘Father Ted’, the sadly missed Graham Linehan, and directed by the very talented Sean Foley whose production of The Play What I Wrote caused such a stir in theatreland.
This is the perfect show if you enjoy having your funny bone well and truly tickled, as hilarious as ever and given an extra comedy edge by a stable of top notch actors. The amazing cast of TV and stage actors includes Simon Day of The Fast Show fame, Ralf Little, the Olivier Award winners Con O’Neill and John Gordon Sinclair plus Chris McCalphy. And, of course, the marvellous Angela Thorne, star of the hit TV comedy To The Manor Born, playing the naïve, sweet but ultimately triumphant widow.
The Ladykillers - The story
The Ladykillers is a deliciously amusing British black comedy telling the tale of Mrs Wilberforce, a widow in her eighties, and what happens when a gang of criminals decides to rent rooms in her gently collapsing house, pretending to be classical musicians as a cover for a bank robbery.
With only her equally eccentric parrot, General Gordon, for support, Mrs Wilberforce is in a dangerous situation. She’s bored and lonely, spending her time imagining crimes and reporting imaginary criminals to the police, who no longer take her seriously.
After the heist, ‘Mrs W’ – as the gang calls her – collects the robbers’ ill-gotten gains from Kings Cross station for them. But when the gang tries to leave with the ‘lolly’ stashed inside the case of a double bass and banknotes start spilling out, things become very dangerous indeed… and we’ll leave the plot there so we don’t spoil it for you!
Suffice it to say that this production is set to be a hit all over again, with new generations of theatregoers discovering this beautifully silly story for the first time and people who loved the old black and white movie flocking to see it re-enacted on stage.
