The King's Speech in London

True friendship against the backdrop of war – It’s The King’s Speech

He didn’t expect to be king. But when Bertie took his brother’s place on the throne he was faced with an enormous challenge. With war on the horizon and a speech impediment to overcome, Bertie’s friendship with his eccentric genius of a speech therapist soon became central to his success as king.

The King’s Speech – The story

Albert, known affectionately as Bertie, was a quiet type. The second son of the British king George V, he wasn’t supposed to be in line for the throne. But when his elder brother David fell in love with American divorcee Wallis Simpson and eventually abdicated, he left Albert a role he neither wanted nor expected.

In a spectacular case of unfortunate timing Albert was forced to lead the nation into war, with the expectations of the British people weighing heavy on his shoulders. Worst of all was his stammer, which meant he had a very hard time speaking in public. Enter the eccentric Australian Lionel Logue, a maverick speech therapist whose task it was to tackle the king’s stuttering and help him get his crucial messages of support across clearly and confidently to a country on the brink of war.

Based on the Oscar and BAFTA winning movie

Based on David Seidler's original play, the 2011 film The King's Speech won four Oscars and seven BAFTA awards, making a huge impression worldwide. It’s a captivating story, even more so because it’s true. The King's Speech is brought to life again with a touching warmth, affection and intimacy that belongs to the stage alone. You’ll be on the edge of your seat, empathising with Bertie as he wrestles to overcome his stammer and becomes close friends with Logue as a result.

To David Seidler, who also suffered from a stammer, Bertie was a hero. And Colin Firth fans will not be disappointed by the stage version, which looks at the growing relationship between Bertie and Logue in more detail than the film. This is a wonderful tale of triumph over adversity, of growing friendship and respect against a dramatic cultural backdrop. The stage design, by Anthony Ward, is wonderful, as are the fabulous period costumes. Directed by Adrian Noble, it’s set to be just as successful as the film.
