The Judas Kiss in London

The Judas Kiss – Oscar Wilde’s real-life tragedy

The extremely talented Rupert Everett has played a major part in this excellent production’s success, as it transfers from the Hampstead Theatre to the West End for a glittering theatreland run. And he’s had rave reviews starring in this classic play about the redoubtable, acerbic and rebellious Oscar Wilde, whose work he adores.

Everett brings to startling life the role of Wilde himself in this superb production of David Hare’s excellent play about the author’s ill-fated relationship with the third son of John Douglas, Ninth Marquess of Queensberry, Lord Alfred Douglas. Affectionately nicknamed Bosie, he was a twentieth century British author and poet but was best known as the writer’s lover and great friend.

Everett, deeply inspired by Wilde, is determined to finance his own film about the writer’s life and times, and let’s hope he pulls it off. In the meantime he plays the role with considerable sensitivity, style and verve, and his deep and affectionate understanding of Wilde’s character shines through every carefully-crafted line. A masterpiece in the making!

The Judas Kiss - The story

The story takes us back to 1895. Oscar Wilde's most famous masterpiece, The Importance of Being Earnest, has enjoyed a triumphant launch but dark clouds are amassing on the horizon. These are halcyon days but before long Wilde will find himself imprisoned, rejected, vilified and to all intents and purposes, destroyed.

When he’s forced to choose between his beloved Bosie and his freedom, the tragically romantic Wilde chooses a typically risky path that inevitably and agonisingly ends in personal disaster.

The Judas Kiss portrays the two critical crossroads moments in Wilde’s life, both times when different decisions might have resulted in very different outcomes. As such it’s beautifully poignant, an exquisite piece of work dealing in the ugly currency of tragedy and betrayal.

Contains adult scenes and themes

This is a heart-wrenching story and if you’re a sensitive type you might find it overwhelmingly sad. Remember your hanky! Because the play focuses on adult themes and scenes throughout, it’s grown-up stuff and not suitable for youngsters.

Brilliant!

A great night's entertainment! As is to be expected, David Hare has produced a thought-provoking, fascinating play. Be prepared to listen and be made to think - but if for some reason you object to male nudity on stage, then it's probably not a play for you. Don't forget that Oscar Wilde was gay!

The Judas Kiss

Rupert Everett was extraordinary - he was Oscar Wilde. A play that will stay with me. Quite a lot of nudity so don't go if you mind that.

Tour de force for Rupert Everett

Outstanding and sensitive production with excellent script. Unsuitable for children and teens as it contains prolonged scenes of gratuitous nudity.

Thought provoking and brilliant!

A very witty, amusing and thought provoking play that shows what happened afterwards and provides an interesting new perspectiive on the scandal. Note to parents: It is not clear from the ticket booking site that there is nudity and there are scenes of a sexual nature int his play. I'd advise anyone who might be offended by this not to go, and also parents of children to be aware of this. This play would not be suitable for small children.

Disappointing Judas Kiss

I found the play disappointing on all fronts: a thin plot, average acting and the big star, Rupert Everett just didn't have the charisma expected in such a role. Poor visibility in row P, certainly not worth the ticket price of over £50.
