The Government Inspector in London
“There’s no money in honesty!"
A comedy about hypocrites, hysterics and hustlers.
An over-privileged, vainglorious liar is mistaken for a high-ranking government inspector by the corrupt local officials of a parochial town. Desperate to cover up their crimes and escape censure, the town’s Governor and his cronies pull out all the stops to try and bribe this dishonest buffoon with money, wine and women.
The Government Inspector is Nikolai Gogol’s masterful comedy about how corrupt power destroys itself, exposing the tragi-comic consequences of collective delusion and the swindlers who would exploit it.

A story worth telling and hearing, and a staging worthy of the storyWith such rich characters, it could have been easy for the play to moralise, or to be a conceited satire. The acting was passionate - good - but it was present, and interested, in a half-empty room, so much so, that the room felt filled to the brim and as if it were at least three times the size it was! The comedy and the satire, weren't shallow, nor gratuitous, so it didn't turn the characters, archetypes of people we all know and are, into caricatures not worthy of considering profoundly... It, also, didn't take itself, so serious, either, that it would, inadvertently, cover, how funny we are, when we act surprised at the truth, after pretending, out of self-interest, to be gullible... An evening full of laughter and joy!

Such a pity people are missing this great show! Very funny.A very funny show - Russian in origin but easily fits with the English. Slightly farcical but well-acted and good characters. A few familiar faces - Keill Bynoe-Smith was excellent as was 'Angelous' from Vic and Bob. I liked the incidental music and it's nod to the play's Russian origins. It's a pity there hasn't been more publicity as quite a few empty seats in this lovely little theatre. I was at the back and I can't imagine there are any bad views.
