The Go-Between in London
Starring:
Michael Crawford
Hang onto your hats! If you've ever read L. P Hartley's splendidly atmospheric and disturbing 1953 novel, The Go Between, you'll adore this, the latest brand new British musical to sweep into the West End. Micheal Crawford stars as Leo, and captures the audience's attention from start to finish with his tragic revelations.
The subtle, fascinating story is compelling to the core. There's a magical musical score by Richard Taylor and an accompanying book by David Wood. The production has already won hearts and minds across the nation, scoring high at the West Yorkshire Playhouse, the Royal & Derngate and the Derby Live event, and it won the Best Musical Production award at the Theatre Awards UK.
The Go Between – The story
Leo had forgotten the past until it sprang upon him unexpectedly and he's hurled backwards in time to re-experience it. Now it's vivid and real again, the awful events that happened during the uncannily hot, oppressive and uncomfortable summer of 1910, when Leo was a boy.
He spent that long-ago summer in Norfolk, with the family of a school friend called Marcus, in their luxurious country home, where he soon found himself acting as the increasingly reluctant go-between for two star-crossed lovers. The gorgeous and incredibly posh Marian and the man she's lusting after, rough and ready tenant farmer Ted, are embroiled in a forbidden love affair and they pull poor, innocent Leo into their mess.
Confused and scared by the adult passions and deceit he witnesses, he's unable to escape the couple's sphere of influence and falls deeper and deeper into their frighteningly intense world. His manipulation and the shame he feels about it shape his life forever, and the resulting coming of age story is deeply moving.
The glittering Apollo Theatre is your venue, and the show opens on 7th June for a strictly limited 20 week run. If you love your theatre poignant, dark and disturbing, full of hidden currents, this one's for you. The 74-year-old Micheal Crawford is always a joy to behold on stage, and plays the lead character to perfection.
How would you feel if you found an old diary which reawakened long-buried and painful memories, feelings you'd suppressed for decades? This beautifully crafted piece reveals the power of reminiscence and the often-shocking awakening of the human heart.

Cultural ExperienceQw weren't sure we were going to like this show at first because it was not the sort we normally choose, but it was so professionally presented and performed that we felt culturally uplifted by the end. A different experience!

MediocreThe show was ok. The two boy Ctors and Michael Crawford carried it. The music became tedious as there was little variation.

Not a natural fan of musicalsWe went to see The Go-Between as family of L P Hartley - it is a great story the staging is excellent, acting superb especially the 2 Leo's. I tend to avoid musicals but this was not too sing songy an emotional portrayal of a classic story with laughter and tears but I was disappointed that the famous opening line of the book was slotted in rather clumsily.

A well performed but difficult storyline held togther by the performance of Michael Crawford who gave his heart and soul in representing an old man reflecting upon the past.as above

An excellent performance by the entire cast but to describe the show as a musical when the only musical instrument is a piano is rather misleading (the pianist was excellent)!

Worth seeing this new take on an old storyIt's not a 'blockbuster' - but a good remake of an old story - the acting was good especially the 'Go Between' lad who carried himself very well. Michael Crawford took the part of the adult 'Go Between' and played and sang it well. Altogether a very good evening's entertainment.

Go between reviewThe story was a little confusing in the ending. I thought I heard Marian say that everyone was supposed to think that Ted died of suicide. Did he or did he not? Why did he commit suicide? That makes no sense to me. I also thought that Michael Crawford's voice was rather wasted in this play. He certainly was expressive, but his majestic voice was lost in the pedestrian and unimpressive score.

absolutely brilliant, don't miss it!!!!Michael Crawford was excellent, a lovely voice and utterly fabulous. The other cast members were the same; especially the two young boys. We had a upgrade in our seats and only five rows from the stage.

Intelligent piece of theatreThis is not a musical in the usual sense of the word. A quite intense piece where the words and intonnation are more important than the music. The pianist on stage worked well and did a great job. Michael Crawford and the young boy, who played Leo , both worked so hard to really bring the story to the audience.

DisappointedWe went on Michael Crawfords reputation but were disappointed . He was good but had too little input - a weak story line. The small boy was excellent , the farmer very good , the others mediocre . From the other side of the world we had hoped for another great show as we have seen here over the years. I would not recommend this show.

Disappointing!Music was by means of a clanky and annoying piano. More or less a singing play than a musical. Dim lighting didn't help the uninspiring set which seems to have been done on the cheap. Dull songs. Afraid it is a case of "taxi for Mr Crawford" who just couldn't reach the notes, which made the boring songs even more tedious. We love theatre and the West End, but this show was, for us, as disaster. We couldn't wait for the interval...at which point we escaped!

What a ShowFantastic theatre, nice and cosy you really feel near to the stage and in keeping feel really involved with the performance. The cast were amazing !! All with amazing voices, the children really add to the show especially making the story more interesting. Best of all it was AMAZING to see Michael Crawford he was fantastic and mesmerising he made his character believable. All the little touches that Michael does during his performance really adds up to the fact he is the BEST at not only singing but delivery.

Beautiful.A real old classic story. I loved the piano music and the singing was really beautiful. I think it would appeal to everyone as there was two brilliant young boys acting in it. Also to older people as it was not loud blaring music like a lot of shows today. Michael Crawford has a beautiful voice and is a true professional to act such a completely different part from Frank Spenser. "Some Mother's do have Them" The costumes and the set were fantastic.

Review: THE GO BETWEEN at the Apollo Theatre
by Phil Willmott | Thursday, June 9 2016, 14:15
Before it even starts this production of the GO BETWEEN is a significant moment, it’s the rare arrival of a new musical in the West End. Its chances of survival are considerably boosted by the involvement of producer, Bill Kenwright who we probably have to thank for the casting of musical theatre mega-star Michael Crawford (The original Phantom)

Michael Crawford Leads the Cast of a New West End Musical
by Phil Willmott | Friday, March 25 2016, 12:43
Producer Bill Kenwright is to be congratulated for taking that most dangerous of financial risks, launching a new musical in the West End. Recent attempts to do so, MADE IN DAGENHAM and BEND IT LIKE BECHAM failed to turn into long running hits.
