The Gift in London
What would you do if someone sent you something appalling in a beautifully wrapped box? If you love quirky comedy you’ll adore the world premiere of Dave Florez‘s new three-hander, The Gift, on stage for 2025 at the Park Theatre on Clifton Terrace, London N4.
The Gift - the story
Colin receives an anonymous package. He opens it, and is bemused and appalled by the contents. He knows he should ignore it but he can’t resist wondering who would send him such a thing, and why they posted it inside a cake box.
The incident sends Colin into an existential spin, battling dizzying new levels of his usual default position: existential angst. He starts to trawl through his entire life, over-thinking everything as usual, sure he can channel his inner Poirot and find out who sent the thing.
His sister Lisa and her husband Brian desperately try to save Colin from himself but as his list of possible suspects grows longer and longer, he remains determined to do everything in his power to smoke the sender out.
This irreverent comedy explores the murky waters of past transgressions and modern-day vengeance. What would you do if someone tried to upset your own applecart? Pretend it didn’t happen, take it in your stride, see the fun side, or – like Colin - never stop until you’ve found the perpetrator and made them pay?
About The Gift
The play is written by the acclaimed screenwriter and playwright Dave Florez (Embers, Experience, Afterbirth, Somewhere Beneath). His stage play Experience sold out at Hampstead Theatre, shortlisted for the Nick Darke Award and adapted by the playwright into a feature film. Embers was chosen for the BFI London Film Festival Works-In-Progress Showcase 2022 and premiered the Raindance Film Festival 2023, nominated for Best UK Feature Film.
A run of excellent plays at the Edinburgh Festival include Somewhere Beneath, winner of the Scotsman Fringe First Award for Writing Innovation & Excellence. Dave’s short plays have been produced at Royal Court, Soho Theatre and the Criterion Theatre, West End.
