The Dresser in London
Starring:
Reece Shearsmith, Ken Stott
Your venue? The Duke of York's theatre. The production? It's a fresh version of Sir Ronald Harwood's ever-popular piece about an ageing Shakespearian actor and his loyal dresser Norman, doing their best to keep the entertainment going at an old-school wartime touring theatre. This time Ken Stott plays 'Sir' and Reece Shearsmith plays Norman, his long-suffering dresser.
Reece Shearsmith of League of Gentlemen fame plays the exasperated dresser to perfection, a role worthy of his impressive stage and screen success. He's joined by Ken Stott, who plays the irascible old 'Sir' to perfection. He won an Olivier in '95 for the National Theatre's Broken Glass, known and loved nationwide for his portrayal of the Scottish detective Rebus and his movie role in the Hobbit trilogy.
Playwright Sir Ronald Harwood is no stranger to success either. His 1980s movie adaptation of the play was nominated for Academy, BAFTA and Golden Globe awards. This revival comes complete with a multi-award winning cast and creative team, and direction by the brilliant Sean Foley is the icing on the cake. The critics and pundits are already predicting this'll become the most talked about West End production for late 2016.
The show previews in early October and is set to run through to early 2017. If you loved Harwood's plays Quarter and Taking Sides, or adored his films The Pianist and The Diving Bell and the Butterfly, you won't want to miss his best-loved play when it hits London’s West End.
The Dresser – The story
Welcome to the backstage of a provincial English Theatre. This play is about the theatre itself, an affectionate and intelligent exploration of the actors and practices of the old days. It looks at the complex relationship between the ageing ‘Sir’ and the actor's personal assistant Norman, who struggles to keep Sir's life and career under control against the odds.
Sir was once a famous and respected classical actor but he's at the tail end of his career, and he flat refuses to perform his best-known role as King Lear. It's Norman's job to squeeze one final great performance out of the old man, the last of a dying breed of old-school Shakespearian actors. World War Two rumbles on in the background as the two characters end up reluctantly depending upon each other.

A tour de forceMust be one of the best plays of the year. Acting faultless with a melancholic finish.

Brilliant ensemble pieceI thought the play was two hander - it wasn't - and it was fantastic to see some top quality actors (Selina Cadell, Simon Rouse and Harriet Thorpe who I know from TV roles) in support. Ken Stott was fascinating as "Sir" - by turns pathetic, bombastic and reasonable - and Reece Shearsmith - what can I say. His "Norman" was bitchy, manipulative and so much more multi-coloured than I had thought from just reading the play. Not a weak link in cast or crew (who always get overlooked - well done all of them)

Poor story, but well acted. We didn't find the story very engaging. The play had a few amusing moments in the first half, and the acting was superb from the two main characters in particular. Maybe more suitable to the regular/serious theatre lover than casual attendees. Certainly wouldn't recommend for young audience.

Stellar Performances! The ensemble cast all give great performances with Reece Shearsmith being an absolute stand out in the title role of Norman, the dresser. The play is a wonderful piece which is a satirical look into the world of the theatre, filled with fun and pathos. A special mention must go to the builders of the set, which cleverly moves from scene to scene, making the piece magical.

Review: THE DRESSER, Duke of York's Theatre
by Stuart King | Saturday, October 15 2016, 10:17
Back in 1983 I had the extraordinary privilege of witnessing Albert Finney and Tom Courtenay deliver two of the most theatrically ebullient performances about the grandeur and grimness of a life in luvvydom, ever committed to celluloid. This was Peter Yates film version of The Dresser which relied upon Ronald Harwood’s exceptional scripting of his original play to generate considerable critical success, including 5 Academy Award nominations.

Shakespeare was right, all the world IS a stage!

I really enjoyed the current revival of THE DRESSER last night, Ronald Harwood’s melancholy comic tragedy about a back stage wardrobe assistant coaxing and bullying an ageing actor through a production of King Lear during a WW2 bombing raid. Through this situation Harwood explores the futility we all feel from time to time using theatre life as a metaphor for existence.
