The Crucible in London
The Crucible reveals the National Theatre's brilliant new production of this legendary play. It transfers to the West End for a strictly limited season, directed by the Olivier Award-winning Lyndsey Turner. The Telegraph has called the designs - by Es Devlin - 'magnificent'. You're going to love this fresh version of Arthur Miller's masterpiece, a fascinating parable exploring power and its abuse.
Nominated for 2023 Olivier Awards for Best Revival and for Best Lighting Design, with lighting by Tim Lutkin, it weaves a powerful tale. Brought up to be seen but not heard, a group of young women discover that their words have acquired a terrifying power. The climate of terror that's overcoming the community is being fuelled by private battles and vendettas, wild public accusations are being made, and before long the truth itself is on trial.
On stage from 7 June to 2 September 2023 at the magnificent National Theatre, the Sunday Times is calling it a 'five-star scorcher', The Telegraph says it's a 'gripping revival of Arthur Miller's masterpiece. The National Theatre at its best', The Evening Standard is delighted to see Miller's Crucible 'burning bright once more' and the Financial Times calls it a 'stark and stunning'.
What's the plot of The Crucible at the Gielgud Theatre?
The Crucible is a play by the American playwright Arthur Miller, a partially fictionalised plot exploring the notorious Salem witch trials at the Massachusetts Bay Colony of Salem from 1692-93. He wrote the play as an allegory for McCarthyism, which involved the US government persecuting people they accused of being communists. And it remains just as relevant to today's social and political landscape.
Miller himself was questioned by the USA's House of Representatives' Committee about potential 'Un-American Activities' in 1956, and was actually convicted of contempt of Congress when he refused to identify other people who attended meetings he was at.
The play was first performed at the Martin Beck Theatre on Broadway but Miller wasn't happy with the over-stylised, chilly production and the resulting hostile reviews in the USA, which was paranoid about left-wing thinking at the time. The New York Times boldly called it 'a powerful play' and a 'driving performance'. Despite political interference it won the 1953 Tony Award for Best Play and soon became a classic. Today it's revered as a vital work in the history of American drama.
Who is The Crucible at the Gielgud Theatre for?
The production contains strong language and themes which some people may find distressing. Bright lights are used during the transitions and haze is used throughout. The play is suitable for people aged 14 or more.

Absolutely brilliantThis was the most intense play I have ever seen! I was fully invested in every line the characters spoke and the actors did a brilliant job at highlighting the raw emotions each and everyone one would be feeling at every moment. I was gripped the whole way through. What an amazing play!

Review: THE CRUCIBLE at Gielgud Theatre
by Stuart King | Sunday, June 18 2023, 08:02
Amidst the puritan’s early social colony at Salem, Massachusetts Bay, a man momentarily succumbs to the charms of his bedridden wife’s young housemaid. When her juvenile fantasies of love are rebuffed, in her craving for vengeance she conjures demonic visions and gradually implicates more and more victims with her accusations of witch-craft.

"There are wheels within wheels in this village, and fires within fires", warns the Reverend John Hale gravely. That village would be Salem, Massachusetts, where witchcraft, rumours, grudges and hysteria abound, in this gripping and intense production of Arthur Miller's classic play.
