The Artist in London
Michel Hazanavicius's Oscar-winning film The Artist has been adapted for the stage in a brand new production by the Olivier-award-winning choreographer, Drew McOnie. The show is produced by Theatre Royal Plymouth, The McOnie Company, Playful Productions, Bill Damaschke, Stephen and Nancy Gabriel, and Underbelly. We’re in for a gorgeous theatreland treat.
The new production of The Artist will premiere at the Theatre Royal Plymouth in 2024 and the word on the streets is there’s bound to be a West End transfer.
The Artist tickets – Hot 1920s glamour
This stage version of the 2011 movie by Michel Hazanavicius is set in the era of the silent films, where the action was supported by music and subtitles rather than spoken dialogue.
The plot? Roll back time to 1927. Hollywood's glittering movie screen idol George Valentin is enjoying praise for his latest masterpiece, The Russian Affair. Peppy Miller is an aspiring young actress who collides with Valentin at the premiere, which ultimately launches her career. When Kinograph, the movie studio where Valentin works, decides to get into talking pictures, Peppy is keen to get involved - but Valentin resists. Peppy tries to help him come to terms with the bright new world of talking movies but at the end of the day, it’s Valentin’s decision.
The Artist creative team
McOnie directs and choreographs. The associate director and choreographer is Ebony Molina and the musical director is Chris Poon. Girl From the North Country composer Simon Hale writes the music. The set and costumes are by Christopher Oram of Frozen, and the lighting design is by Zoe Spurr from Good. The sound design is by Simon Baker, who worked on Matilda the Musical. The video design is by Harry Potter and the Cursed Child’s video designer Ash J Woodward, the puppetry design is by Maia Kirkman-Richards (The Sorcerer’s Apprentice), and the casting comes from Will Burton CDG.
