Sweet Bird of Youth in London
Sweet Bird of Youth – Riveting, wild and quite, quite gorgeous
The theartsdesk.com review says it all. This is a ‘riveting, wild and gorgeous’ romp of a play. And it has been thrilling audiences since it first hit the Broadway stage in early 1959, starring movie superstar Paul Newman.
Sweet Bird of Youth first opened in London’s West End in 1985. It was an immediate smash hit at the Haymarket Theatre, directed by the legendary Harold Pinter and starring Lauren Bacall, Michael Beck, James Grout and David Cunningham. In fact it was such a big hit that it eventually transferred to Los Angeles.
In 1962 a feature film was released, again starring Paul Newman. A TV version appeared in 1989, starring the glorious Elizabeth Taylor alongside Mark Harmon, Valerie Perrine, Ronnie Claire Edwards, Cheryl Paris, Kevin Geer and Rip Torn. And the play has even inspired musicians. Van Morrison’s Youth of a Thousand Summers was inspired by the play as was Sweet Bird of Truth by the rock band The The.
Sweet Bird of Youth - The story
Chance Wayne is gorgeous. And he knows it. From the ‘wrong side of the tracks’ in small-town Florida, he is deeply in love with his hometown sweetheart Heavenly Finley, the cherished daughter of a corrupt and ruthless businessman-politician. Her father Boss Finley dislikes Chance’s less than salubrious background, persuading him to leave town and head for Hollywood, at the same time sending his daughter off on a tour of Europe to keep the couple apart.
When Chance meets the washed up drunk of a movie star Alexandra Del Lago, they spark up a torrid relationship. She has just suffered a disastrous comeback, with her latest movie shot down in flames by the critics. He wants to break into Hollywood and become a star himself, blackmailing the ageing celebrity to get a part in a film. But he still loves Heavenly and she is never far from his thoughts.
When Del Lago and Wayne hit his home town there’s bound to be trouble. Boss Finley would dearly love to throw Chance out of town again, but the notorious Miss Del Lago’s fiery and chaotic presence makes things more difficult than he could ever imagine…

A bold productionOverall the show was very good and the acting was excellent. Its one of those plays where if you want to get the full value and understand what Williams intends by it you need to read the script before or after the show!

AcousticsThere were times when it was difficult to hear what was being said on the stage. I had bought tickets in the stalls row J. However we did enjoy the play Iam a fan of Miss Kim Cattrall and have seen her last year in the play Private Lives which was also very good.

An excellent retelling of a Tennessee Williams classicEvery thing about this production was exceptional. From the moment you see the set you are drawn into the world of Chance and the Princess.

Give it a WhirlI realised that the penalty for cheap tickets was not being able to see the expressions on the actors' faces. But some of the dialogue I also missed because it was too quick or too quiet....

This show really dragged on and the story line was very thin. I was about ready to leave after the first half. Shame because Kim Cattrall is a prominent actress and I was surprised how disappointing this whole show was.
