A Strange Loop in London
A Strange Loop is a musical with book, music, and lyrics by Michael R. Jackson, the US playwright, composer, and lyricist. The musical was nominated for 11 Tonys, winning the 2022 Tony Awards for Best Musical and Best Book of a Musical. First produced off-Broadway in 2019, then staged in Washington DC during 2021, it finally hit Broadway proper at the Lyceum Theatre in April 2022.
This amazing production also won the 2020 Pulitzer Prize for Drama, directed by Stephen Bracket who wowed us with Be More Chill. An alternative musical with a big heart, it's set to a vibrant beat with compelling tunes and cutting lyrics. The end result is razor-sharp, timely, quirky, comically entertaining, and handles the themes of identity, race and sexuality deftly. The cast recording was nominated for the Grammy for Best Musical Theater album, pipped to the post by the 2022 cast recording of Into The Woods.
The Broadway reviews say it all. People have said it's "one of the greatest musicals I've ever seen", "audacious, hilarious, and profoundly moving" "brilliant", one of the funniest and most poignant shows I've ever seen", "above and beyond brilliant!", and "a masterpiece.". No wonder A Strange Loop theatre tickets are predicted to be in high demand.
What's the plot of A Strange Loop?
The show follows Usher, a queer black man who is writing a musical about a queer black man who's also writing a musical. The title is actually a term used in cognitive science, created by Douglas Hofstadter, and it also happens to be the name of a song by Liz Phair.
Usher hates his day job, which he's forced to do to fund his writing. So does the black, gay writer he's writing about, who also has to endure a day job he hates while writing a musical. The result is a show following an artist who is beset by demons, including those in his own head, a man who is desperate to come to an understanding of the strange loop that is his own life.
The director is Stephen Bracket, the choreography and movement is by Raja Feather Kelly, and the rest of the creative team will be announced later. The London cast will also be announced nearer the time.
Who is A Strange Loop for?
Due to the explicit language and sexual situations, the show is recommended for people aged 16 or older.

Vest show I've seen in decadesThis show is so real, so raw, so relevant. One of the only times I've EVER SEEN MYSELF REPRESENTED ON STAGE. Goddess Bless all involved.

A fabulous emotional rollercoasterA show of stunning contrasts! At times a blockbuster but at others intimate; at times hilarious, at others poignant and so sad; at times sacred, at others profane. It took me on a rollercoaster ride which I didn’t want to end. The music was fabulous from gospel, to rock, to ballad! Last, but certainly not least, the cast, especially the lead character, were super-talented! Acting and vocal parts were convincing and immaculate; the harmonies were perfect. The comedy was razor sharp and the audience responded with belly laughs and, at the end, thunderous applause. All well deserved.

Review: A STRANGE LOOP, Barbican Theatre
by Miriam Gibson | Friday, June 30 2023, 15:05
A Strange Loop by Michael R. Jackson arrives at the Barbican this Summer after winning both a Tony and a Pulitzer Prize in New York. Meta and messy, it’s the story of a fat, queer Black man wrestling with identity and intrusive thoughts.
