Standing at the Sky’s Edge in London
Welcome to the multi-award winning new musical Standing at the Sky’s Edge. It won the Olivier Award for Best New Musical, and the UK Theatre Award for Best Musical Production, plus the South Bank Sky Arts Award, a series of accolades proving its extraordinary appeal. Richard Hawley also won an Olivier, along with the musical director Tom Deering, for Best Original Score or Orchestration.
The musical transfers to the West End after a series of sold-out runs, and people are calling it the most exciting new British musical for ages.
Standing at the Sky’s Edge theatre tickets take you to a show that originated with an album, the seventh by the respected English musician Richard Hawley. It was released in May 2012 and refers to a real place in the musician’s home city of Sheffield; Skye Edge, a hillside with views across the city centre, a location that used to be notorious for crime-ridden council estates until it was redeveloped in the 2000s. In 2012 the album was nominated for the Mercury Prize, and a few years later it was transformed into an inspiring musical.
Directed by Sheffield Theatres’ Artistic Director Robert Hastie, you’ll love Hawley’s remarkable songs. The book is just as good, described as ‘beautiful, hilarious and gut-wrenching’ and written by Chris Bush. The Set and Costume Designer is Ben Stones and the Choreographer is Lynne Page. The Music Supervisor, Arranger & Orchestrator is Tom Deering and the Lighting Designer is Mark Henderson. The Sound Design is by Bobby Aitken, Wigs, Hair & Make-up Design by Cynthia De La Rosa, and the Casting Director is Stuart Burt CDG. The West End cast is yet to be announced, so keep your eyes open.
Originally on stage at the Sheffield Crucible Theatre in 2019, it completed a successful run at the National Theatre in London during March and it’s due at the Gillian Lynne Theatre from 8th February 2024.
What's the plot of Standing at the Sky’s Edge?
The show tells the story of three families living on the Park Hill council estate. Originally written as a love letter to Sheffield, it reveals the hopes and dreams of three generations over six dramatic decades, exploring the universal themes of love, loss and survival. As such, Standing at the Sky’s Edge showcases the history of modern Britain through the stories of a typical housing estate, delivering a heart-warming exploration of the power of community and the places we call home.

Thought provoking and moving. Highly recommendWell worth seeing. The music is amazing. I enjoyed the interweaving of 3 stories. Probably easier to follow if you are familiar with the history of the era. I wouldn’t recommend it for younger children.

Phenomenally powerfulThe clever intertwining of 3 families lives over decades alongside, at times, a darkly comedic script-and combined with a fantastic score from Richard Hawley collided into a phenomenally powerful and nostalgic story that was brought to life by a cast of strong characters. Love, hopes, tragedy and brutality set against the backdrop of politics and brutalist architecture. Highly recommended.

Absolute must see. This musical has been around for five years so I’m amazed that I hadn’t heard of it before. Having now seen it, my wife and I think it’s the best musical we’ve seen in many years. The story is essentially about the Park Hill housing estate in Sheffield, but it also charts the political landscape in Britain over the last sixty years. It is heartwarming and heartbreaking in equal measure and Richard Hawleys songs fit seamlessly into the storyline. Do yourself a favour and see it while you can. 5 Stars.

The Political & Personal Intertwine with Great StagingThe play covers three families over a span of 50 years in a Sheffield housing project. Through the prism of their lives, we see the era’s wrenching economic and political changes. Brilliantly staged, the families pass in and out, sometimes overlapping, on the same set. Original music performed by talented singers and a terrific band was riveting and memorable.

Powerful contemporary musical from National TheatreA powerful, superbly performed contemporary musical that had edge, compassion and many human stories. Set in the Park Hill Estate, Sheffield it cleverly intertwines the lives, loves and transformations of a housing estate from 1989 to the present. Lots of good music and beautiful voices. Many audience in tears at the end. Gillian Lynne Theatre is the perfect venue for it too.
