Speed in London
Fancy a world premiere by a respected playwright whose last production was Olivier-nominated? Welcome to SPEED, a fast-paced play about a driver speed awareness course in Birmingham that quickly turns into a chaotic therapy session. Brilliant.
SPEED the story
It's like the start of a joke: a nurse, a delivery driver, and an entrepreneur walk into a speed awareness course. You'll meet Abz, Britain's leading expert on road safety and the most in-demand anti-speeding course trainer north of the M25. The setting is an ordinary hotel basement in Birmingham, where the three speedsters are sent to face a stark choice: change their wicked ways or lose their driving licenses. What should be a perfectly normal everyday course quickly becomes a dramatic group therapy session as the three sinners confront the real issue: they're all absolutely furious, angry all of the time... but why?
About SPEED
SPEED delivers a breakneck drive through the daily frustrations and long-buried secrets that make ordinary people tizzy. The play reunites writer Mohamed-Zain Dada and director Milli Bhatia after their amazing success with the Olivier Award-nominated, Blue Mist at the Royal Court Theatre, a delicious play about three Muslim friends and the tatty shisha lounge they hang out in, Dada's debut play.
Mohamed-Zain Dada is a playwright, screenwriter and producer whose second full-length play, Zidane of the Ends took to the stage at High Tide Theatre’s Inventing the Future festival in 2021. He's also responsible for Emily (GLITCHED) In Paris at the Royal Court and LOOT at the Jerwood Theatre downstairs.
SPEED cast and creatives
Mohamed-Zain Dada wrote the play, Milli Bhatia directed it, and Charles Holloway OBE generously supported the production.
