Soho Place Theatre (@sohoplace) history
From the outside
@sohoplace is the first brand new West End theatre to be built for 50 years. It sits next to the site of the old Astoria theatre, which was pulled down to build the capital’s new Crossrail transport system. The auditorium sits directly above the new Elizabeth line, and the Northern and Central lines, where they meet at Tottenham Court Road station. Despite the setting, there are no vibrations or noise from the trains far below.
This is a state of the art venue that was 12 years in development, a modern theatre set at the heart of a thrilling new development that totals 285,000 square feet including offices, shops, and a piazza. There’s a purpose-designed rehearsal room, a Green Room, a bar in the same building, and a beautiful outdoor terrace. As you can imagine it makes a great meeting point for a top night’s entertainment.
Sohoplace Theatre architecture and history
Part of the wider Derwent London project, @sohoplace was designed by architect Simon Allford, the founder of Allford Hall Monaghan Morris and RIBA’s President. The result, in his words, is “an extraordinarily complex and delightful project (with the) highly engineered architecture and design of a Swiss watch but built on an urban scale."
Owned by Nica Burns, the London theatre producer and owner, and operated by Nimax Theatres, @sohoplace provides an unusually flexible auditorium, brilliant acoustics, and an intimate audience experience with perfect sightlines and no obstructions wherever you sit. Even the cheapest seats give you amazing views.
None of the 602 seats, arranged in the round, are further than six rows from the stage. The curved auditorium makes audiences feel like they’re on stage themselves, and can be changed into a variety of configurations to suit varied productions.
The beautiful dark blue and gold interior, and the sheer quality of the space, is inspired by Burns’ visit to Epidaurus, an Ancient Greek site, when a child. Epidaurus remains one of the greatest theatres in the world and @sohoplace reflects the same classic colours, along with crystal star lights set out like constellations, visible from outside.
A member of the Nimax Group, the venue’s fellow theatres include the Vaudeville, Apollo, Duchess, Garrick, Lyric, and Palace theatres, all West End giants in their own right.
