Semele in London
Performing for the first time in London in over 280 years, Semele will make its homecoming run at the Royal Opera House in June 2025. The latest instalment in the venue's series of Handel's Covent Garden works, Semele is an opera that presents a timeless commentary on power and privilege.
Semele - The Story
Directed by Oliver Mears, Semele is a mortal who is taken to a secret hiding place by Jupiter, the king of the gods. He lives to seduce and destroy and Semele can't believe her fortune as she's now introduced to a luxurious life. However, it's his wife Juno who will formulate a plan for revenge - setting her sights on ruining her husbands young lover.

The cast includes Pretty Yende, Ben Bliss, Brindley Sherratt, Carlo Vistoli and Alice Coote. The cast of this production may vary on the performance date.
With music by George Frideric Handel, the creative team includes libretto William Congreve, director Oliver Mears, designer Annemarie Woods, lighting designer Fabiana Piccioli and movement director Sarah Fahie.
