School of Rock the Musical in London
Starring:
David Fynn
It's School of Rock! The Broadway version of this brand new musical, based on the hit movie, has Andrew Lloyd Webber and Julian Fellowes to thank for its broad people-appeal. They're both involved in the production, a considerable theatrical accolade in itself.
If you loved the antics of Jack Black in the movie, you'll enjoy the musical theatre version even more. Worldwide the film grossed more than a hundred and thirty one million US dollars. And it held sway for years as the biggest-grossing comedy movie of all time, until it was finally overtaken in 2015 by Pitch Perfect. Now this hugely popular story takes to the stage.
School of Rock musical – The story
The plot follows the struggling rock singer and guitarist, Dewey Finn. He's been kicked out of his own rock band because of his ridiculous on-stage antics and he's at a loose end, bored and broke. When he decides to disguise himself as a substitute teacher at a prestigious private school, all hell lets loose.
Dewey's students are a talented musical bunch and Dewey encourages them to form a rock band. But his motivation is far from honourable - with a bit of luck his fourth graders will beat the favourites, his old band No Vacancy, and win the Battle of the Bands contest. And he'll be able to pay his rent.
This is a comedy and, of course, everything goes horribly pear-shaped. But despite a series of madcap misadventures and total disasters, Dewey eventually proves that there's no stopping the school of rock.
No matter what your age, if you've ever fancied playing in a rock band you'll be totally inspired by the amazingly talented band of youngsters who form the stage band. You'll go home singing, thanks to fourteen brand new show tunes by Lloyd Webber and a host more original songs from the movie.
If you like nothing better than a big, bold musical comedy with a warm heart, this one's for you.

Review: School Of Rock at the Gillian Lynne Theatre
by Miriam Gibson | Monday, October 14 2019, 07:57
Next month, School of Rock will celebrate the third anniversary of its opening night at the Gillian Lynne Theatre. It’s a faithful and fun adaptation of the Jack Black movie, but there are some distracting flaws in its writing and production.

Fresh Look: SCHOOL OF ROCK at the Gillian Lynne Theatre
by Isabella James | Wednesday, September 26 2018, 13:53
This West End production brings to the stage all of the fun, quotable moments of the film but with an added underlying story about children under pressure from pushy parents. Andrew Lloyd-Webber has used the songs from the Jack Black movie but added a number of extra solos and anthems, including the catchy and rebellious ‘Stick it to the Man’.

Andrew Lloyd-Webber and Julian Fellowes (hardly the types generally associated with rebelliousness), are ‘the talent’ behind this stage adaptation of Richard Linklater’s 2003 film, in which a down-on-his-luck, guitar-playing slob, Dewey Finn (played with gusto in the West End by Gary Trainor), surreptitiously wangles a job as a supply teacher at a posh prep school, where he introduces his already musically talented young charges, to the joys of rock.

Last night the production of SUNSET BOULEVARD, starring Glenn Close, which Londoners enjoyed last year at the Coliseum opened on Broadway to a sweep of rave reviews.
Coming fast on the back of that it was announced that his latest musical SCHOOL OF ROCK has extended its run at the New London Theatre until January next year.

Review: SCHOOL OF ROCK at the New London Theatre
by Phil Willmott | Thursday, November 17 2016, 10:07
It's been a tough few decades for Andrew Lloyd Webber since the 1980s when announcement of a new show by him would prompt a ticket buying frenzy keeping hits like EVITA, CATS and PHANTOM in the West End for years. Of the big mega hits only PHANTOM OF THE OPERA is still running.
I say "only" but it's an extraordinary achievement to have created something that's been so loved by so many people for so long in London and on Broadway. In recent years however the composer's new pieces have failed to take root and grow into long running hits.
