Rotterdam in London
Following a critically-acclaimed, sell-out run at London's popular Theatre503 in 2015, and another at the city's Trafalgar Studios, Jon Brittain's exceptional play Rotterdam returns to the capital for summer 2017 to thrill audiences all over again.
What's the story? Alice is a lesbian, and she's really keen to come out. The scene is Rotterdam, it's new year and she has finally drummed up the courage needed to confess to her parents that she's gay, even though it's by email rather than in person.
She's just about to hit the 'send' button when she's broadsided by totally unexpected surprise. Alice's girlfriend Fiona has a shock in store. She wants to start a brand new life as a man. In fact she has always identified as a man. And she wants Alice to start calling her Adrian. Once Adrian begins his transition to manhood, Alice finds herself in a tricky situation. Does this actually mean she's straight?
Expect a hugely entertaining and bitter-sweet comedy exploring the nature of gender, sexuality and being a very long way from home in more ways than one. The writer, Jon Brittain, is the talented co-creator of Margaret Thatcher Queen of Soho, What Would Spock Do? and The Sexual Awakening of Peter Mayo, all of which bodes well for an exceptional evening's entertainment.
What does the media say? The Evening Standard calls it “Smartly observed and very funny… warm and emotionally intelligent” and Time Out says that “Brittain’s play is another reminder - warm, witty and wise - of the stupidity of thinking that there are only two genders”
This play is a tender story played out by powerful characters. Alice and Fiona are sensitively portrayed, making it a thoroughly modern plot treated in a totally contemporary way. Brilliant.

Jon Brittain’s ROTTERDAM stormed the theatre scene when it first opened at THEATRE 503 nearly two years ago. Following its transfer to Trafalgar Studios and to an off Broadway venue, Brittain’s comedy about sexuality, relationships and identity gets another revival, this time at The Arts Theatre.
