Relatively Speaking in London
Relatively Speaking – Who’s fooling who?
Wyndham’s theatre host this excellent revival of Alan Ayckbourn’s runaway hit play that first took to the West End stage in 1967 and continues to delight more than four decades later. If you love nothing better than a gentle yet hilarious comedy of manners, this one’s for you.
Relatively Speaking - The story
Taking place in two places, Ginny’s London bedsit and the patio of Philip and Sheila’s smart Buckinghamshire home, this play is as relevant today as it was when first written. Originally called Meet My Father, it tells a complex tale fraught with confusion and misunderstandings.
Ginny and Greg are in love and want to marry. But Ginny hasn’t split up with her married lover Philip yet. Her bedsit is full of flowers and chocolates, gifts from Philip, and he has even left a pair of slippers under her bed.
Greg is so starry-eyed he doesn’t notice anything, but becomes suspicious when Ginny ventures out for a day in deepest Buckinghamshire, supposedly to spend time with her parents but in reality determined to dump Philip before Greg catches on.
Greg follows Ginny and arrives first. He’s certain Philip is Ginny’s father and does the decent thing, asking permission for her hand in marriage. Philip is completely confused, believing Greg is asking for permission to marry his wife, Sheila, who is so confused herself that she only adds to the hilarity. Ginny finally turns up and, in an effort to hide her relationship with Philip, persuades him to act as her father.
As you can imagine, things get sillier and sillier until everyone, including the audience, is utterly and quite spectacularly confused. It’s a delightful play and the gorgeous Felicity Kendall, in her first Ayckbourn play for years and years, joins a stellar cast bound to delight theatregoers from the offset.

Frothy funFirst act seems a bit heavy, but takes off from act 2, and the rest is clever and witty with lots of laughs and ingenious twists and turns. A frothy fun night out. And Felicity Kendall is superb.

Possibly a little slow to start while the story was being set but all in all a really good show which we all enjoyed. The acting was excellent and as the story line developed the intrigue developed with it. A really good show with 4 excellent actors.
