Raisin in the Sun in London
A show rich in powerful messages about discrimination, racism and assimilation; A Raisin in the Sun heads to the Lyric Hammersmith after being described as one of the best plays ever written when it debuted on Broadway in 1959.
A Raisin in the Sun - The Story
This deep psychological study of working-class black family life reflected the playwright’s own experiences of racism, when her wealthy family moved into a white neighbourhood. The drama explores what happens when a dream is deferred. Do dreams dry out like raisins in the sun? Or do they survive?
Billed as a thrilling new production of Hansberry’s classic American drama, it’s directed by Tinuke Craig (Jitney, The Color Purple). To this day the play remains groundbreaking, pioneering and challenging, breaking through barriers when it became the first play by a black woman to appear on Broadway. Expect a classic family drama full of humour and heart, a salutary tale in a world still divided by inequality.
About A Raisin in the Sun
The New York Drama Critics' Circle called it the best play of 1959 and The New York Times called it a play that changed American theatre forever. A Raisin in the Sun was also nominated for a Tony Award for Best Play, Best Actor in Play, Best Actress in a Play, and Best Direction of a Play. The rest, as they say, is history.
A Raisin in the Sun is a powerful and poignant drama that tackles issues of racial discrimination in family dynamics, and the pursuit of the American Dream with profound depth and realism. The production heads to the Lyric Hammersmith this Autumn.
