Passion Play in London
Starring:
Zoe Wanamaker
Passion Play, a black comedy classic by Peter Nichols
Passion Play is a true modern classic, winner of the Evening Standard Award for Best Play. Written by the acclaimed playwright Peter Nicols, this compellingly funny/painful black comedy is due to make a much-anticipated comeback, hitting the West End running with Zoe Wanamaker in a starring role.
Passion Play - The story
Horrified laughter just about covers it! This is dark comedy at its subtle British best.
Art dealer James and his wife Eleanor have been happily married for a quarter of a century. They’re comfortable together… or so they think. All is well on the surface until their world is turned completely upside down by James’ decision to set up a secret rendezvous with their recently widowed and much younger friend, Kate.
As the affair progresses, lies breed more lies and the characters’ innermost desires and hidden passions are gradually revealed. Eleanor eventually finds out about the affair and though he swears the affair is over, James cannot give Kate up. He keeps seeing her, the lies do their corrosive work and by the time the play comes to its tragi-comic conclusion, the marriage is stripped bare.
Impeccable credentials all round
The award winning stage, TV and movie actress Zoe Wanamaker plays Eleanor and the production is staged by David Leveaux, director of Broadway productions Arcadia, Cyrano de Bergerac, The Glass Menagerie, Fiddler on the Roof and Nine. Wanamaker’s West End portfolio includes the London revival of All My Sons. She also has impeccable Broadway credentials with Awake and Sing, Loot and Piaf under her belt.
Adult themes
This is a seriously good play for grown-ups with adult themes, unsuitable for children.

Excellent - lived up to my expectationsSaw this show reviewed in the newspaper and it was Zoe Wannamaker being in the cast that sold it to me and didn't realise so many other great actors in the show. It was excellent, very different style, we really enjoyed it.

Poetry in motionBeautiful set, amazing acting and brilliant storyline. Fantastic compound dealing with relationships, marriage, infidelity and passion. Not for the prude.

Ectasy's AgonyPassion Play's central conceit of featuring alter egos is ingenious but the play's chief power is in its melding of the comic and the tragic, the erotic and the poignant. Kate is drop dead gorgeous and we understand why James cannot give her up but Eleanor's plight warns us of the the irrevocable nature of adultery. Annabel Scholey mesmerises as the siren who sings two married partners to their destruction but Zoe Wanamaker stuns as the deceived wife.

A mid fifties relationship crisisIf you enjoy good dialogue and a sharp plot, don't miss this play which intrigues and sizzles as it unfolds. It was a pleasure to see Zoe Wannamaker again especially as I remember her as assistant stage manager at the Liverpool Playhouse many years ago with Robert James and Mona Bruce in the cast. It was a thoroughly enjoyable matinee.

Passion PlusFabulous evening out. Love this little theatre, fantastic top rate actors who gave it their all, well produced, and of course what a clever play, funny and sad at the same time. Not for the prudish though, fair bit of nudity and naughtiness.

seeing it again after 30 yearsWe first saw this play about 30 years ago and were deeply impressed and moved by the play and the performances. It is still a moving, indeed harrowing play, and the current performances are outstanding. Zoe Wanamaker in particular charts the disintegration of Eleanor's life clearly and convincingly. Wonderful.

Fascinating 20th century 'comedy of manners'The play offers the audience an engaging, bittersweet look at marital infidelity, with the 'passion' of the title relating to both art (the husband is a restorer of paintings) and music (the wife sings in a classical choir). The artful trick of having two actors playing the husband and two actresses playing the wife works extremely well, allowing for words said (and unsaid) between the couple, and internal character debate, to flow very naturally and convincingly. The ensemble acting and comedic timing is excellent. Strongly recommended for those who like twists and turns of plot, witty one-liners, and an underlying playwright's compassion for the (all too human) characters involved. The classic love-triangle viewed through the prism of the early 1980s, but very much relevant to our time too. Zoe Wanamaker heads a wonderfully accomplished cast. Not to be missed!

Brilliant Passion PlayPassion Play is an intense experience. The clever creation of the two main character's alter egos as separate characters requires the audience to concentrate hard on the dialogue. Listening to the audience after the show, quite a few were a little confused. It is worth the hard work though. I found the ending quite emotional. The acting was brilliant, the set extremely clever, and the play itself is brilliant.
