This brilliant play sweeps audiences right into the heart of the Manhattan Project, fearlessly exploring the tension between the extraordinary science behind nuclear bombs and the still-controversial justification for their use in war.

While fascism started to spread more or less unchecked across Europe and General Franco marched on Barcelona, a couple of German chemists stumbled upon nuclear fission. At the same time their fellow scientists in Berkeley, California, recognised the horrific destructive potential of the new technology, which messes around with the building blocks of the universe to spectacularly dangerous and ugly effect.

Oppenheimer - The story

The ambitious and charismatic J. Robert Oppenheimer found himself perfectly placed to lead the most dramatic scientific undertaking in human history. At the same time struggling to cast off his radical past, Oppenheimer engages in a race to see who will be first to create a weapon so terrifying and destructive it will halt the Second World War in its tracks.

Whatever you think about Oppenheimer's role in developing nuclear technology, the personal cost of making history was extraordinarily high. Which makes for a superbly tense and thrilling play.

The play is directed by Angus Jackson and stars John Heffernan in the title role. In the words of the British Theatre website, “Oppenheimer is overwhelmingly satisfying theatre.
