No Man's Land in London

Starring:

Patrick Stewart, Ian McKellen

Take one of Harold Pinter's best-loved and most entertaining plays, a tour de force of complex comic wit and rapid wordplay. Add two respected British actors, huge stars of stage and screen. What do you get? A production to reckon with, a real piece of theatrical class, something you really don't want to miss. Exercise your grey matter with No Man's Land.

No Man's Land – The story

First produced more than four decades ago in 1975, the play sees two ageing writers, Hirst and Spooner, on a bender in a Hampstead pub. Not just a booze bender, but a conversational bender. It's fast-talking, fast paced, as bright as quicksilver with absolutely brilliant dialogue. And as the alcohol flows, the men's stories evolve.

Determined to keep up the pace, when they get back to Hirst's smart home nearby, they carry on drinking. Their tall tales get taller, and you're left wondering whether the men actually know one another at all. Are they playing out some kind of elaborate charade? Is the whole thing a hoax? When two sinister young men turn up and join them, the men's conversation gets darker, and the drunker they get the odder things become.

McKellan plays Spooner, Stewart plays Hirst. The talented Sean Mathias directs the production, which wowed Broadway audiences at the Cort theatre. The famously hard to please New York Times awarded it four stars. All the signs are good. Very good.

Both actors are, by all accounts chuffed to bits with their collaboration. McKellan found playing Spooner to Patrick's Hirst in the US was a “constant joy”, and Stewart saw the 1975 production three times in one week at Wyndham's. Ralph Richardson and John Gielgud played the men back then, and Stewart was so bowled over he promised himself he'd play Hirst or Spooner some day.

Not only is it a completely brilliant play. It's also a real joy for both actors. Things couldn't get much better, and the result is a truly striking production.

Pinter is revered for his ability to peek over the edge of the void, and this masterpiece dives deep into some of the playwright's best-loved themes: the struggle we all have interacting with our fellow humans, the way memory can let you down, and more, combining into a rich comic mix that lightens the load beautifully.

Playing at London’s Wyndham’s Theatre from September, No Man’s Land brings together two acting legends in one unmissable play.

Not suitable for children aged 12 and under.
