Next to Normal in London
The critics adored it, and so did audiences. Now the amazing Donmar Warehouse production of Next to Normal is due to transfer to the West End at Wyndham's Theatre for a limited 14 week summer run.
All about Next To Normal – A Pulitzer and Tony-winner
First staged on Broadway in 2009, it went on to win three Tonys and the Pulitzer Prize for Drama. The Donmar Warehouse was the venue for the UK premiere, a fresh new production by Michael Longhurst. By all accounts this is a very well deserved transfer and we predict it’ll sell out fast.
Described as a ‘courageous and deeply moving piece’, this serious drama isn’t all doom and gloom. It’s also shot through with light and joy. The story cuts right into the beating heart of the human condition, a musical that makes us face our deepest vulnerabilities as well as celebrating humanity’s remarkable capacity for endurance.
You can expect the same thoroughly emotional experience people loved at the Donmar, from where the show is transferring, where audience members actually wept and standing ovations were the norm at every performance. Tickets went like hot cakes and many people didn’t manage to secure any, so grab yours while you can. It’s going to be extraordinary.
Next to Normal takes an emotional deep-dive into the challenges behind mental illness and grief. The plot follows an ordinary family as they do everything they can to find ‘normal’ under incredibly tricky circumstances: the mother is struggling to cope with bipolar disorder, and it’s getting worse.
Next To Normal cast and creative team
The musical has music by Tom Kitt and a book and lyrics by Brian Yorkey, the winners of the show’s Pulitzer and the Tony for Best Original Score. The Donmar’s Artistic Director Michael Longhurst directs.
There’s music supervision by Nigel Lilley, design by Chloe Lamford, lighting by Lee Curran, sound design by Tony Gayle, movement, choreography and additional direction by Ann Yee. Plus video by Tal Rosner, musical direction by Nick Barstow, production management by Chris Hay, and casting by Anna Cooper.
The West End cast will be announced nearer the time.

The set, the subject, the music and the casting was absolutely incredible. I'm so so unbelievably happy I decided to choose this show!!Be prepared to question yourself and be challenged. This show will affect anyone who has parents, been a parent or has friends or friends who have children or are parents. A powerfully evocative exploration into mental health and who of us are not mentally challenged on a daily basis?

Review: NEXT TO NORMAL at Wyndham’s Theatre
by Stuart King | Thursday, June 27 2024, 07:50
Rock musical NEXT TO NORMAL scored a huge success on Broadway back in 2009, winning 3 of its 11 Tony Award nominations and then (amidst some controversy) the Pulitzer Prize for Drama. Last year, under the stewardship of artistic director Michael Longhurst, this new production enjoyed a brief run at the Donmar Warehouse and has now transferred to Wyndham’s Theatre for a 14-week West End residency.
