Urinetown, the hit Broadway musical with lyrics by Mark Hollmann, and book and lyrics by Greg Kotis has announced that it will transfer to the Apollo Theatre in the heart of London’s West End from 29 September 2014.
The production directed by Jamie Lloyd originally opened this February at the St James Theatre in Victoria and starred Richard Fleeshman and Jenna Russell. The creative team comprises award winning designer Soutra Gilmour, lighting designer Adam Silverman, choreographer Ann Yee and sound designers Terry Jardine & Nick Lidster.
Urinetown is set in a city of the future that has been inflicted with a terrible drought and now the residence must pay to use all toilets. The tyrannical business tycoon Caldwell B. Cladwell owns the public toilets and rules with an iron fist, if you relive yourself in the streets, it’s off to the infamous Urinetown, where no one ever returns from. However, an unlikely hero named Bobby leads a revolution against the maniacal corporation, because when you’ve got to go, you’ve got to go!
A hilarious satirical comedy, Urinetown was nominated for ten Tony Awards and took home three after its acclaimed run on Broadway from 2001 until 2004.
On the announcement of the transfer, director Jamie Lloyd commented, ‘Having attracted a diverse audience of all ages at the St. James earlier this year, I'm bursting to bring our production of this brilliantly off-kilter musical comedy to the West End, where I hope we'll make an even bigger splash.’
Urinetown opens at the Apollo Theatre on 29 September 2014, following the closure of the current production Let the Right One In.
