Review: RAPUNZEL at Park Theatre

Rapunzel Park Theatre’s original and fresh take of the story of Rapunzel is a not to be missed, it delivers both an evening full of laughter and plenty of surprises.

Things are tough in the Kingdom of Puss Puss, as the Queen (Aretha Ayeh) and King (Rolan Bell) are trying their hardest to produce an heir to the throne. If that wasn’t enough matters get even more complicated once a con man, The Great Gazombees (Mark Cameron) along with his side-kick, Dobson (Alex Hope) start interfering with Queen’s health, plotting to rule the kingdom himself. Even the birth of Princess Rapunzel won’t stop Gazombees from getting what he wants.

Written and directed by the Artistic director of Park Theatre Jez Bond and Mark Cameron “Rapunzel” is not only full of double entendres (which makes for a great choice for both parents and children) but also it manages to give the well-known story a contemporary twist.

Bond’s Rapunzel (Aretha Ayeth) is a science genius, a geek who wears a scuba diving outfit, sending a message that there is nothing wrong in knowing what you want and being bold and strong. Rapunzel no doubt takes after her mother, who when warned by Doctor Chufflebanger (Avita Jay) about drinking certain medicine, dismisses any comments by saying “My body, my choice”.

Aretha Ayeth is not only brilliant in the double roles of The Queen and Rapunzel, but she also possesses a breath-taking voice. Mark Cameron and Alex Hope are a fantastic double act whilst Rolan Bell’s quick wits are very impressive when he strays from the script. The strong ensemble ensures that this is an evening full of spontaneity and laughter.

If you fancy finding out the connection between Rapunzel and Jeremy Corbyn, get to Finsbury Park and watch some great panto. You won’t regret it!
