In an era of in-your-face musicals, you'll find tender, quietly powerful Once a rare gem. This screen-to-stage show about a will-they-won't-they romance between a Dublin busker and an anonymous Czech girl plundered the Broadway awards cupboard and has won universal acclaim in the West End.
What's the deal?
Once is our exclusive Show of the Month. Top-price upper circle tickets are £45 at face value, but if you book by November 30th, they’re just £31.50 – that’s 30% off.
What's the show about?
A busker – Guy – plays in a Dublin bar and packs up to leave. Before he can go, he's approached by a young Czech songwriter – Girl – with a hundred questions about his songs.
He tells her they were written about his ex-girlfriend, and the stage is set for Guy and Girl to embark on a tender, sometimes troubled, often light-hearted, will-they-won't-they romance of their own.
Set in a Dublin street and bar, Once's ingenious, intimate staging literally invites you in.
Why should I see it?
The conflicts and confusions of real-life love are front-and-centre in Once – but it's light and lovely by turns too. Much of the show's uncommon emotional depth is due to the narrative being driven along through the songs of Glen Hansard and Markéta Irglová rather than spoken.
Their outstanding folk-rock score is a bracing departure from the style of most theatrical musicals, and has made it to the stage intact. Gorgeous standout Falling Slowly won the 2007 Oscar for Best Song. Coupled to the performances of acclaimed singer / songwriter / actor Declan Bennett and European Film Awards Best Actress winner Zrinka Cvitešić, the music is simply irresistible.
What should I do now?
Don't miss this chance to warm yourself by the gentle flame of the very wonderful Once this winter. Book during November and get top-price upper circle seats face value £45 tickets for £31.50.
