The "most important Shakespeare production of the year" (Daily Telegraph), transfers to the West End later this year ahead of a UK tour.
Tracy-Ann Oberman.
Following a triumphant season at the Criterion Theatre and a sold-out UK tour, Tracy-Ann Oberman will reprise her role in The Merchant of Venice 1936 later this year.
Oberman is the first British actress to play Shylock in this production.
Shakespeare's play about the complex interplay of mercy, justice, and revenge centres on a city on the brink of political unrest, as fascism sweeps across Europe. The strong-willed single mother Shylock runs a pawnbroking business from her house on Cable Street, where Oswald Mosley's British Union of Fascists threatens to march. When the charismatic, antisemitic aristocrat Antonio comes to her for a loan, a high-stakes deal is struck between the pair. Will she take her revenge, and who will pay the ultimate price?
The Merchant of Venice 1936 will run at the Trafalgar Theatre from 28 December 2024 - 25 January 2025.
