Jonathan Kent’s acclaimed production of Gypsy has announced that it is extending its West End run at the Savoy Theatre. The Jule Styne and Stephen Sondheim musical will now run until 28 November 2015.
Staring Imelda Staunton as the iconic Momma Rose, Gypsy opened at Chichester Festival Theatre last year and received unanimous praise from both audiences and critics. Now, the Wet End transfer of the production is the hottest ticketed in town, smashing the all time box office record at the Savoy Theatre taking £408,300 for performances ending 25 April 2015.
As well as Imelda Staunton, Gypsy features an incredible cast including Peter Davison as Herbie, Lara Pulver as Louise, Dan Barton as Tulsa and Gemma Sutton as June. The entire leading cast have confirmed that they will stay with the show right through to November 2015.
Imelda Staunton now takes her place with other musical theatre legends in taking on the role of Momma Rose. In the past, actresses such as Dame Angela Lansbury, Elaine Stritch, Tyne Daly, Bernadette Peters and Patti Lupone have all made the role their own and been immortalised in musical theatre history.
Written in 1959, Gypsy is based on the memoirs of Gypsy Rose Lee, a famous American Vaudeville and Burlesque artist. The story focuses on Rose Lee’s controlling mother and her efforts to make huge stars of her two daughters, no matter the cost. The show also contains some of the most iconic musical numbers including, ‘Everything’s Coming up Roses’, ‘Some People’ and ‘Let Me Entertain You’.
Gypsy is now booking at the Savoy Theatre until 28 November 2015.
