Giant, the award-winning debut play from Mark Rosenblatt, directed by Nicholas Hytner (Straight Line Crazy, La Belle Sauvage), premiered at the Royal Court Theatre in September 2024 and is now transferring to the Harold Pinter Theatre for a limited 14 week run.
Giant takes place over a single afternoon in the life of beloved children’s author Roald Dahl, who finds himself on trial in the court of public opinion over an explicitly antisemitic article and forced to choose between making a public apology and risking his reputation. The author of classic children's books such as Matilda, The BFG, and The Witches, Dahl's antisemitic views have made him a complex historical figure, and in this play, Rosenblatt grapples with the two sides of the author in a fictionalised reckoning.
John Lithgow (Conclave, The Crown) stars as Roald Dahl, with Aya Cash (The Boys, The Franchise) as Jessie Stone, Elliot Levey (Cold War, Patriots) as Tom Maschler, Rachael Stirling (The Divine Mrs S) as Felicity Crosland, Tessa Bonham Jones (Dune: Prophecy, The Young Woman and the Sea) as Hallie, and Richard Hope (Hijack) as Wally Saunders. You can see the cast hard at work preparing for opening night in these new rehearsal images.
A special post-show talk on the making of Giant will take place on June 9th, which will feature Mark Rosenblatt in conversation with David Byrne, Artistic Director of the Royal Court Theatre.
