It was announced last week that the smash-hit musical The Commitments will ends its run at The Palace Theatre on Sunday 1 November 2015.
Adapted by Booker Prize-winning author Roddy Doyle from his 1987 novel of the same name, The Commitments tells the story of an unlikely band of kids trying to hit the music big time in 1980’s Dublin, but personal relationships and the pitfalls of fame get in the way, before they find reconciliation in their music.
Directed by Jamie Lloyd, the show contains a host of classic soul and Motown hits, including ‘Mustang Sally’, ‘I Heard It Through The Grapevine’, ‘Knock On Wood’, Al Green’s ‘Take me to the River’, and Otis Reading’s ‘Try a Little Tenderness’.
The multi award-winning show has played over 1000 performances since its premiere back in October 2013. The inspirational story was also made into an Oscar-nominated film in 1991.
Phil McIntyre, the lead producer of The Commitments said in a statement, ‘We've had a great run at the Palace Theatre and we now look forward to bringing the people's musical to people across the UK & Ireland with our 2017 tour.’
So if you missed out on seeing the West End production, fear not. The national tour will be visiting numerous towns and cities across the UK in just over a year’s time.
The Commitments continues to play at the Palace Theatre in the West End until 1 November 2015.
