The most extraordinary theatrical event you’ll ever encounter is a project unpromisingly called YOU ME BUM BUM TRAIN. Now several years in, it’s so incredibly popular that you have to enter into a lottery just to get a ticket. Talk to anyone who’s been and you’ll be met with a sort of glow and an enigmatic silence. So, what on earth is it?
Their website says “for the show to have maximum effect, the less you know the better. If you want tickets do not research into you me bum bum train.” So what can I tell you that will encourage you to apply? I went along a few years ago with a press ticket and describing any aspect of it without spoiling things was quite a challenge.
What I think I can safely tell you is that the audience experience things one-by-one. That it takes place in a non theatre environment, that it lasts about twenty minutes, that it’ll take you an hour or so to process what you’ve just experienced and that it’s completely exhilarating.
It seems scary at first but the more you relax into it and trust nothing dangerous or humiliating will actually happen to you, despite all appearances, the better a time you’ll have. It will also change your life and teach you a lot about yourself and your hitherto untapped talents and courage.
No, it’s not a religious cult. Or a game, or a kids show. This is grown-up, sophisticated theatre and it takes an army of actors, many of whom are happy to work on it for free, to make it happen multiple times every night.
