A stage adaptation of BROKEBACK MOUNTAIN is making its world premiere in London this May.
It will star Mike Faist and Lucas Hedges, who make their West End debuts in the production.
Marking Ashley Robinson's playwriting debut, Brokeback Mountain will contain original music by Dan Gillespie Sells, who also wrote the score to hit musical, Everybody's Talking About Jamie.
Based on Annie Proulx's novel (which has also been turned into a hit film), the story follows two Wyoming cowboys, Ennis and Jack, as they take up jobs on the isolated Brokeback Mountain in 1963. Following their story across two decades, they flounder in unexpected emotional waters of increasing depth. This is an intense tale of an unresistible and hidden love and its tragic consequences.
Mike Faist will play Jack. Faist is a Tony and BAFTA-nominated actor who recently appeared in the latest West Side Story movie adaptation, as well as performing in the Broadway production of Dear Evan Hansen. Lucas Hedges will play Ennis. Hedges received an Academy Award nomination for his performance in Manchester By The Sea. Further casting is to be announced.
The songs will be performed by Eddi Reader, joined by her onstage Country and Western band: Sean Green (piano/MD), Meelie Traill (upright bass), Julian Jackson (chromatic harmonica) and BJ Cole (pedal steel guitar).
Directed by Jonathan Butterell, other creatives working on this exciting new show include:
- Set and costumes by Tom Pye
- Lighting by David Finn
- Sound by Christopher Shutt
Brokeback Mountain will be the first world premiere play to be originated at @sohoplace, and the fourth production to open at the new venue, following Marvellous, As You Like It and Medea.
This world premiere will run for a limited season at @sohoplace between 10 May until 12 August 2023. Tickets are on sale now.
